I always buy a 5l tin, that way there's a bit left over for topping up if it burns some off.

Ryan.

I set my plugs to 0.85 mm/0.035in: -

And I've bought 2 cans of 4.5litres of classic 20W/50 oil.

That way I've got plenty for top ups.

Well, I've now carried out the first service on our Mini. Im more convinced than ever that it was not serviced just prior to us buying it going on what I found (I'd be interested in your views on this - see pics). Ive replaced the oil 20w50/oil filter/air filter/sump washer/leads. It's been fun and best bit is the car started first time and seems to run much smoother...

So, looking at these pictures of what I found, was this car serviced just 582 miles ago ???

The oil was thick and very sludgy! - see the what the magnet picked up! I had to get a screwdriver to clear obstructions from the hole before the plug would go back in!

The pic of the spark plug and lead is half way through changing - I've just fitted the red lead+plug... (thanks for the recommendation on the leads taffy!!!!)

thanks for all your replies. The car was purchased from a dealer and I'm currently going through the process with Trading Standards etc..

Do Halfords also have the air filter for the mini?
I've found a 4 pack of NGK BPR6ES on the Halfords site, description:

NGK Sparkplugs 710 - BPR6ES-VP4 - pack of 4
Cat. code: 723718-0
NGK Sparkplugs 710 pack of 4

do these sound right?? much cheaper than the ones i was looking at on minispares - these are 9.99 for 4, they were 6.50 odd for 1 on minispares ... makes me suspicious??!!

Yes that sounds like the ones, I was probably getting 710 confused with 071. I'll have to double check my old packaging next time I'm in the garage.

:-

Rechecked my old packaging and it's definitely 710.

:)

And no, that doesn't look like it received a service 582 miles ago. Not unless it's been used for rallying or something in that time!

The oil filter casing is filthy for starters, let alone the state of all the other items.

The major problems being neglect and lack of a decent service for quite some time I'd say!

thanks guys... now assuming nothing has been done with this car so going over it carefully and bringing back up to a reasonable standard (+ taking the garage to court if i don't hear from the guy soon - not just for this but it was advertised as having all front replacement panels/brakes etc when this is not the case - covered up in a nice spray job!)

I wish you luck with your case, as these dealers make me sick and just add to the 'rip off Britain' attitude.
