Looking to buy a DTI gauge to time my cam and add another tool to the shed.

Should I get imperial or metric? :)

Ok thanks GW :) That would be metric then!

What would most instructions be written in? instructions in Haynes, cam manufacturer etc

Must admit I use a DTI for very few things...

Only when building an engine, useful for doing cam timing, compression ratio calcs that's about it, pretty much everything else can be done with feelers.

When doing cam timing the unit of measurement is not really relevant, just the difference.

I know I won't use it very often but will need it when timing the cam in my new engine :)

Thanks again GW

very usefull bits of kit..

Can use it for checking endfloat (cam and crank) , cam timing, cam profiling, flywheel runouts, brake disk run outs, finding TDC, checking for bent cams/cranks&rods

I'd suggest an imperial DTI, or one with both scales. Most of the time when using one the scale is irrelevant because all you are doing is finding zero. The few times you do use it for important measurements (end float on the crank for example) it's almost always going to be for something specified in thou by Rover and things like thrust washers are normally defined in thou and only sometimes in both scales.

Ok, I'll go imperial then

Will this one be ok? eBay might be cheap and nasty...

only one I could find on Chester UK was this one for £32 Chester UK

Oh I've found the vernier 0-3" gauge for £20 on the same page, does this have a magnetic base? Doesn't look as manoeuvrable as the eBay ones...

Can anyone recommend any others?

I might buy one of those £14 ones. Is 0-1" right?

I've got one like that pooky, its cheap and cheerful, but it does the job. Like icklemini says, they are very useful, not just for engine building!
