I know your problem well Anorak, i was stranded at work one night with no headlights, luckily my dad was working not far from where i was and we managed to botch together a crude light switch with the aid of 20Amp terminal block - (read - just jammed all three wires off the switch together in the terminal block!!)

I always carry a spare switch for just such events. Its an annoying problem, isnt it? A fascinating thread-thanks for the tech stuff.
