Can anyone tell me if a cooper mpi has a john cooper garages (S) kit fitted to it, is it classed as a cooper S or just a straight cooper? this might sound silly but on the log book should it say its a cooper S or Just a cooper?? Im confused!

it all depends on when the kit was fitted.

if the car was bought from new and the kit was specified as an option then the car "may" have been registered as a cooper S.

if the kit was fitted after the car was registered then the chances are the V5 was NOT updated.

the car will still be an S, regardless of what the V5 says as it should now have a cooper document to say it's been S'd

Thanks for helping out.
If it only has the plate on the floor to say its been S`d is this still as valuable as not having the document?? as i dont think its stated on V5.

well yeah, i guess the plate is the next best thing.

well i know that the spi kits came with a certificate as well, if the mpi's were the same, its a real shame the owner never kept it. but i dont think it would matter. the plate should have a number on and you can confirm this against the cooper records i belive.

Sorry this is the first time ive posted so please bear with me..

If the cooper has the plate on the floor cross member of the car to show the S conversion has been fitted but i dont have the certificate, is the mini still as valuable? as i dont think its on the V5!!

i would say yes, well in the sense that its worth more than a non S'd car in the same condition, but its not like the holly grail or anything

is your really not sure, contact cooper's with the S conversion number and get them to confirm the identity of the car it was fitted to

EDIT: i don't really think that there's much of a market in creating bogus Mpi S'. if the plates there (and the obvious engine mods) then its an S.

Ok so it would be really good to get the certificate then!! On the S conversion was an extra fuel tank fitted?

I'm not actually sure that the twin tank was part of the standard kit.

it may have been just an expensive option

lets see if i can muddy the waters...

I bought W186 PAP directly from John Cooper Garages in 2000.

It was one of the 3 demo cars they had of the new range 1 - Mini Seven S 2 - Mini Cooper SE 3 - mini Cooper Sport SE. It had the plaque on the cross member BUT it did not come with a certificate.

I did manage to obtain a signed brochure from John Cooper (RIP) which was a fold out thingy with my car and the red and white cars on it.

After a while I realized that my car may have ben one of the first Cooper Sport SE S Works conversions, so I wrote to Mike Cooper to see what was what.

He wrote back and indeed confirmed that mine was the FIRST Cooper Sport SE S Works conversion....BONUS

So No certificate as such, but it had the plaque and a letter of confirmation.

The 2nd tank was an optional extra...and by this time they had stopped providing/ fitting the 5 speed box (I asked at the time)

Lastly - the V5 said - Mini Cooper Sport

I believe the last 500 off the production line came with certificates though and they are now irreplaceable?

Well that's the claim on this site: -

Hi If your mini is a JCG mini then it should have a plate rivited to the crossmember just in side the drivers door.................see pic..............

Our chairman has a John Cooper Works 5 and on his log book it states Roover cooper as thats basically what is is when it left the factory before being converted by JC garages............hope this helps................ :(

An mpi won't have the rocker cover in the pic above, mine just has a JCG sticker on it. That's not the 90bhp mpi kit, that had a twin side exit Janspeed exhaust .

Remember that not all 'S Works Conversions' were sold from JCG as complete cars, you could take your own car to be converted as I did. Those are still genuine 'S's and have a plaque and certificate. I'd also say that you should check out that the car has all the bits it should have. What's the good of a plaque if the head's been changed or other bits over the years. To me it needs to be as it left JCG, e.g. if it needs a new exhaust then replace it with a Janspeed. At one time JCG wouldn't let you buy badges/decals etc. from them unless you could prove you had a genuine S conversion. Now with eBay you can easily get hold of them, so make sure it's genuine!
