It's mainly price.

But chances are if you got a £300 plasma and a £300 LCD that were both the same size the plasma would come out on top because the technology is older so a bit more developed.

LCD's are expected to have a much longer life span however.

What ever you buy, get a freeview tuner built in, saves the hassle of a box later on.

Don't plasmas have a higher contrast ratio, but are more susceptible to screen burn?

Might be getting a HD CRT 32" TV this weekend...ultimate in picture quality. Although it weighs about 70 kg! :)

At the end of the day you get what you pay for......an expensive LCD will out perform a cheap plasma and vice versa...

I have an LG LCD full HD 37" (its around that size) - 6 months old

and a Panasonic plasma HD ready 40" - 2 years old

the LG out shines the panasonic in every way.

There are many variables when getting the best picture...

size
contrast ratio
HD (some full HD tv's 1080P are a lower quality than a top of the range HD ready TV 780p/ 1080i
brand/ make
age/ technology

and on and on.....

best thing go into a shop and look at them all side by side, you will get a better feel for them (not perfect as lighting in shops are different to a front room) and also check out review mags such as "what TV' etc

I bought plasma because the picture on LCD screens goes a distorted colour from an angle, you needed to be right in front of them for it to look right. BUT I have heard that they have improved this.
Also LCD are heavier so you need a more robust stand which would not have gone with my minimal look

I'd recommend going on reviews, and not on picture quality in a shop. Shop TVs generally have out-of-whack contrast settings which will falsely make the colours look a lot more vibrant and crisp than they really are.

My decision was based on reviews, thats what the review said

New plasmas rarely get that problem, however the "burns" tend to go away after a few days anyway.

It was definitely a problem on the early plasmas - the usual practice was to get a warranty where it was replaced every three years.

hey

im waiting a year and going to get a OLED TV.

there greater quality than any LCD or PLASMA and are ultra thin.

But i spose if we all sat around and waited for the new technology to come around we would never buy anything :)

If you're planning to use it as a computer monitor: LCD all the way.
Bigger than 42inch? Plasma.

I bought a 50" samsung plasma last year purely for game playing as we all know how s**t tv is! When playing for a few hours the energy bars and logos burn onto the screen, Stay there for around ten mins then they are gone. Not to fussed about lifespan of the tv my self as long as the picture is good.
