Engine And Gearbox Separated What Next?

hi all, having previously accepted the diagnosis that the whinning that was comming from the engine dept was in the primary gear area, i have now managed to separate the box from the motor as instructed by the haynes....problem is the book tells how th change the primary gear bearings but does nit say how to identify any faults that may be the noise makers...what should i be looking for???? only thing that looks possibly worn is that the idled gear hseems to have some up and down play, and the main gear box bearing has possibly the slightest play...help needed, need to get driving again very soon....
thanks

thanks fo rthe reply, I am going to replace the primary bearings anyway (but they seem ok!), what i am really asking for is what should i be looking for as a cause for the noise, as if i can't identify the cause I might replace these bearings put it all abck together and find that i've missed something and it still whines.....all you can do to check bearings i look for scoring or scract marks on the casing, breaks on the side of the bearing case, free play and the how freely the gear rotate in the casing other than that theirs not much you can do to check the condition without a micrometer or some gauges

u sure the wire isnt slack in the timing chain as mine makes a wine and i recon its the single chain and the fact the ideler gear wants new bearings
hadn't considered the timing chain as a possibility as the noise stopped when the clutch pedal was down....

Check the main roller that the plastic retainer which holds the balls is still intact.
Hold onto the laygear, feel if you can move it on the shaft.
Check the Diff for play, hold one output shaft with on hand, and turn the other backward and forward judging the lash, position the diff so you can see the planet gears inside, see of they move on the pin when turning the shaft, if they do, your diff pin and probably planets will need replacing.

Check the face of the gearbox and transfer case around where the idler gear attaches, should be smooth with no fretting or wear...

OKAY...
had a good look at the faces, the transfer case has some slight wear marks, the face of the thrust washer which runs against this has more pronounced wear . Is this the likely noise maker?
Also the idler gear has quite a lot of up and down play in its bearing in the gearbox case. No wear seen on gearbox face.
laygear seems correct, no play on shaft.
diff also seems fine, only play seems to be if i pull the shafts outward and this is only slight.
