:D
Hello i plan to change the engin in my 96 Cooper SPI I have a 1275 Carb engine to replace it with. My question is this
Do i need to do anything/ modify the replacement engine to get it to run. I have never done any work on a mini with injection so am in need of some asistance. Any one done a fools guide for a engine change on the SPI?
Any help will be greatly received.

um - you binning the injection gear and running carbs?

or you want to transfer the injection gear to the replacement engine?

do you have a haynes manual?

I don't plan to bin the injection gear just replace the engine and keep it injection.
I believe binning will add to my confusion.
I do have a haynes manual.

SPI's tend to use the same engines as carbs (MPI's differ in block design) its just the temperature sensor in the head on carbs isn't used on injections as the sensor is under the injector. Also the dizzy will need to be swapped over.

Although you shouldn't need too I would seriously consider looking at the electrics. I bought an SPi that has been converted to Carb and under the bonnet is a complete mess, confusing wires everywhere, pipes that don't connect to things etc. Whenever i take it to a garage they are stumped just looking at it. It also makes tracing electrical faults a real nightmare if you just kinda plumb-in/splice the wires into the appropriate places.

Like i said its not necessary but I think if you're gonna do it yourself you may as well sort it all out properly then if you sell the car in future or need a garage to do some work they aren't totally confused by your wiring.

also the flywheel is different - and the transfercase has the hole for the crank position sensor.

Well the act of removing and refitting is detailed in the haynes.

to convert the replacement carb engine so that it runs as an injection you will need to fit onto the 'carb' engine in the main these parts from the injection (am sure there are a few extra bits):

flywheel assembly, transfer case, starter (if the one on the carb isnt a pre-engaged type), clutch cover (the 'wok' - again this is because the injections run a verto setup and your replacement engine may/maynot be verto)
distributor + coil
mechanical fuel pump blanking plate..
need to block off the temp sender hole in the head...
may need to block the heater outlet adjacent to #4 plug on the head...
fit the injection manifolds and throttle body
final drive the same as the SPi? - if not your speedo will mis-read

um...that should cover the main bits
