Year: 1980
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): minivan now starts, runs on full choke, when I let the choke in, it just cuts out, no matter how rich i have the mixture on the carb.
Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? 1100cc engine

Like mentioned wouldn't hurt to check the carb for dirt, especially at the bottom of the float bowl.
Also try fitting an inline filter just infront of the carb, for one thing it will act as an indicator if there is a lot of rust in your tank you will see the filter getting dirty .

Is this engine/car new to you? Is this a new problem... did the engine run OK until recently? Were the carb and needle on the engine before this problem surfaced? What recent work have you done on the car... even work that seems unrelated?
If this is a sudden change and the carb/needle used to work OK, I agree with Irostoke that you have an air leak. I know you said you didn't find any leaks. However, does the van have a brake servo? If so, temporarily remove its vacuum hose from the intake manifold, cap the open port on the manifold and see if the car will start and idle with the servo disconnected.

Sounds like that one, its the earlier jet fitted to pre-waxstat carbs should still be a HS4 which is the right carb.
Its the needle that fits in the jet thats the important factor, although if it came out of a running 998 then should be ok for you engine.
I'd still give it a good check over, remove the lid off the float bowl, clean it out, make sure the float needle is clean. remove the float and clean out any holes you can find.

Have you got the engine breather tube connected, or if it isn't is the pipe on the carb blanked off.
What about the advance vacuum pipe, is that ok.
Also just cause it was clean when you fitted it, doesn't mean dirt hasn't come up from the tank. Inline filters are well worth fitting.
