Model: mini van
Year: 1980
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): minivan now starts, runs on full choke, when I let the choke in, it just cuts out, no matter how rich i have the mixture on the carb.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem? 1100cc engine

Sounds like you could have an airleak, check all vacuum pipes, make sure manifold is tight no leaks.

i must admit i think it does have a needle in it to run a k&n pancake filter on a 1000cc engine, but i thought it wouldn't make that much difference, as im running the air box on the 1100cc? what would the correct needle be?

sounds like may have the same problem I had. I would advise you to take the tank off, remove the sender, then run your hand along the inside of the tank. You may well find rust or like i had a rust sort of powder which was clugging up the fuel lines and also made it cut out from time to time. I have now fitted a new tank, which cured the problem, runs without the choke now, and no cutting out. need to adjust the carb, as its reving quite hard now.

Haynes specifies ABP needle, which actually isn't much different from one of the standard AAC needles used in the 998, AAC is a bit richer at top end.

Like mentioned wouldn't hurt to check the carb for dirt, especially at the bottom of the float bowl.
Also try fitting an inline filter just infront of the carb, for one thing it will act as an indicator if there is a lot of rust in your tank you will see the filter getting dirty .

Is this engine/car new to you? Is this a new problem... did the engine run OK until recently? Were the carb and needle on the engine before this problem surfaced? What recent work have you done on the car... even work that seems unrelated?

If this is a sudden change and the carb/needle used to work OK, I agree with Irostoke that you have an air leak. I know you said you didn't find any leaks. However, does the van have a brake servo? If so, temporarily remove its vacuum hose from the intake manifold, cap the open port on the manifold and see if the car will start and idle with the servo disconnected.

right shes been sitting two years, and in this time i did borrow the carb for my girlfriends mini! whoops!! so i now have a carb on the van that was in my garage i got given 2 years ago lol! i had to take off the head to change a valve, now done & have good compression on all 4 cylinders, just wont run unless on full choke. do you think the carb is no good? also there is no break servo on the van. hope that helps.

Sounds like that one, its the earlier jet fitted to pre-waxstat carbs should still be a HS4 which is the right carb.
Its the needle that fits in the jet thats the important factor, although if it came out of a running 998 then should be ok for you engine.

I'd still give it a good check over, remove the lid off the float bowl, clean it out, make sure the float needle is clean. remove the float and clean out any holes you can find.

when i got given the carb i was still at college, so took it into college & cleaned it throughly. so float bowl is clean, and the float is (i think!) working correctly!

Back to airleaks,

Have you got the engine breather tube connected, or if it isn't is the pipe on the carb blanked off.

What about the advance vacuum pipe, is that ok.

Also just cause it was clean when you fitted it, doesn't mean dirt hasn't come up from the tank. Inline filters are well worth fitting.
