Hey guys!

Ran into a bit of a snag with the removal of the engine. Tried searching on the forum but couldnt find what i was after.

Basically were trying to remove the driveshafts, all is undone and its moving freely but with the gaitors the driveshafts wont come out. Question is how do i get them out? Is it case of just pulling or do i have to take the gaitor off. With taking the gaitor off its just a steel band around it which wont brake off from what we've briefly looked at. If i need to get a new gaitor are they expensive at all? And i guess there a pain to put on as they are to get off?

Heres a pic to jog brains

Remove the large boot clip then pull the driveshaft out which seperates the inside of the pot joint, the boot and innerds of the cv joint will just slide out, you can buy boot clips from your local motorfactors for a few pence each

You need to remove the balljoint from the upper suspension arm. The rubber boot is really holding the inner and outer parts of the joint together and isn't the best way to separate the shafts.

"Remove the large boot clip then pull the driveshaft out which seperates the pot joint, you can buy boot clips from your local motorfactors for a few pence each" - do it that way and you'll most likely drop the balls out of the joint and will certainly need to clean and regrease it - any old grease won't do either.

If you go for removing the joint from the gearbox drain the oil first. The links show special tools but you can improvise. Personally I'd take the joints out of the gearbox as chances are it would benefit from new oil seals anyway.

I'd also clean that before I attempt to strip it any further.

If the gaitor and driveshaft are in good condition no need to split the driveshaft there.

Use a bolster chisel between the gearbox housing and pot joint and pop the metal cup off the output shafts.

All well and good but if you pull the shaft with the pot joint attached you'll be no better off, the pot joint won't fit through the subframe.

You really need to seperate the shaft from the pot joint. There are several threads here about how to do it and it's in Haynes but in short if you look closely under the inside edge of the gaiter you will see an edge. This is the edge of the inner member of the pot joint, if you strike this with a drift (such as a large flat screwdriver) while holding the driveshaft it will pop off of the shaft.

Or you can pull the whole joint out of the box as above and seperate the shaft from the outer CV instead, then pull the shaft through the frame backwards.

If he's just removing the engine removing the pot from the box should make enough room.

Yep for just removing the engine, popping the pots off works a treat, did it just before xmas..

Like mentioned, disconnect balljoints top and bottom both side, disconnect steering trackrods..pull shafts as far as they will go, don't even need to dismantle brake assy.

My apologies, I thought he was removing the driveshafts. Should have paid more attention to the first post. I wonder what made me think that? Maybe the title..... =]
