It's good practice to put the rings back where they were. New rings would want running in and honing. I wouldn't worry too much about gunk going in to the water jacket etc. Getting the oilways clinically clean is what really matters.

Rite i see. Well that's alrite then, i can justify spending £150 or so on new bearings and a decent torque wrench...
Also if the blocks all stripped out i can use whatever i want really to clean the deck and pistons properly. The oilways are pretty small though so apart from sending the block for dipping i can't see how im going to clean them out properly. I could block one end of the hole and fill each oilway with some petrol and leave it for a few days.
Also what machining needs to be done to the main caps to fit a centre main strap? I've noticed they're only 8 quid...

Diesel is one of the best cleaning fluids available. Used it to clean my gearbox, gears etc. Brings them up like brand new.

Right might have to get some diesel instead.
Pretty sure i'm going to take the crank assembly out now anyway to replace the bearings so will be able to clean everything good and proper.

By now you will have learned that you should have cleaned the engine with GUNK before stripping it.
The advice about soaking in Redex to clean the piston tops is sound; it wil usually soften all but the worst burn marks if left overnight; you can repeat the dose if it does not. Only an idiot would use a wire brush, unfortunately many here do not read the warning at the top of the page- if you don't know the answer don't post.

Yer like i said, i tryed a wire brush and straight away it scratched and marked the top of the piston so i just left that there.
