Sorry Allybally - that was me mmisleading you - I have checked the user manual and you tester doesn't have the feature I was describing

bolloxs, i knew i shouldnt i bought the cheap 1, what do i need to look for on the box before i buy it

No no no - that's fine!!! It will work!!!

lol right so the 1 i have got can detect a short circuit, can it detect a dead circuit, or is this the same thing

A short circuit just means that something in the circuit is incorrectly in conduct with something it shouldn't, such as if a wire is passing through a panel and chafes so the bare wire is in contact with the metal. The tester needs to show when there is little or no resistance, or in other words where conductivity does exist. In the example, touching one probe against the panel and the other probe against any exposed part of that wire (where it ends on the fusbox, for example) would show a low or zero resistance.... does that explain it?

You have got the instructions for that one? If not click here:

right so basically the electric runs down the cable, all the way untill it meets the bit where the wire is in contact with for instance the chassis, so the electric is passed to the chassis, and from that no electric is reaching where its supposed to go to

Spot on - basically, all the little electric bits take the easy way out through the bodywork instead of going to work where they are meant to!

(Edit - LOL - I should have used that line in my A level physics!! )

so if im going to test it for a short, i need to get 1 probe before and 1 probe after the short for my meter to detect it

----------ProbeRed-----------------short---------------------------------------ProbeBlack 1

or ----------------------------------------short----------------ProbeRed------------------------ProbeBlack 2

i think it would be 1, it makes sense to me

Cheers

Not heard of a dead before.... where do you think this short is anyway? I know your relay thingy is messing up, but I'm not very familiar with spi electrics - what does that feed?

The relay module i think feeds the ignition the fuel, and 2 other things im not sure without looking at my haynes manuel, but the relay module is burning out (theres pics on another 1 of my topics) and someone has sugested that it could be a short or a dead, so i dont even know if im looking for the right thing

not unless a short is a dead, it makes sense if it is

a dead short is a wire that is shorting to earth with no power getting to the relay box.
when u put the new box in what were the connections like on the plug,as if they were burnt black/brown this will cause it to burn out again. as the power is trying to get to the box and is heating up and sparking through the burnt part and melting the new box

so what your saying is the power goes up the wire, and then tries to go through the connection but cant, so it heats up and the the heat gets through the connection causing the circuit board to burn out
