Well Syd Barrett left the band in 1968 due to serious drug problems, but yes rip Syd because he started it all off and wrote some beautiful songs too.

yea supposedly he took lsd so much he never came down from it, he did work with Gilmore after he left Floyd, he died in 06 of pancreatic cancer most likely due to his abuse of drugs . although Gilmore says it wasnt the drugs , Syd said he had been abusing drugs since he was 21, he also stated he had tried every drug , Gilmore also did alot of Lsd hes ok, he also had diabetes which also contributed to his general bad health leading up to his death

Well I've heard that Gilmour and Write experimented a little, whilst Waters and Mason preferred a nice pint instead.

But Syd literally destroyed his brain on LSD and there was nothing anyone could do. I quite like some of the tracks on his 1969 and 1970 solo albums (Barrett and The Madcap Laughs), but you can tell there is a difference in his singing voice compared to his earlier Floyd classics like 'Arnold Layne' or 'See Emily Play'.

i think that he was screwed completly by then , he got worse when Floyd recorded shine on you crazy diamond he walked in to the studio watched for a while and walked out didn't say anything to anyone, they never closed the doors to him , they just didn't and couldn't have a loony in the band , in his last years with floyd he couldn't even sit up during a recording session,

Such a waste of a life

Yes a real waste of a great talent, but they had to leave him out of the band because he just couldn't perform and whilst touring America he'd be okay one minute and then he'd just stand there staring into space the next.

In the beginning, he was the main driving force behind Pink Floyd and wrote all the best songs, but Waters reckoned that he couldn't handle the fame either because whilst they were miming 'See Emily Play' on Top of the Pops, Barrett said something like 'John Lennon wouldn't put up with this?'. So Waters just said, 'what are you talking about, we've made it big'.

But the band were certainly haunted by the loss of him as 'Dark Side Of The Moon' was all about madness (or at least a few tracks like 'Brain Damage' were).

Then there was 'Wish You Were Here' i.e. Syd (with 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' also being all about Syd) and 'The Wall' album and film was all about the life of a rock star who lost his mind, i.e. Syd Barrett.

When the 4 main Pink Floyd members got together again (after years of arguments between Waters and the others) a few years back at that G8 Concert, of course Syd wasn't there, but they showed a photo of him on the big screen behind them at the end of 'Wish You Were Here'. Sad because he died pretty soon after.

Syd on the right of this photo and his eyes give away his condition, as they sang on 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', 'now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky': -

There was briefly 5 members in 1968 with the arrival of David Gilmour to make up for Syd's bizarre behaviour. (But even Gilmour was an old mate of Syd's from their Cambridge days so he was equally upset about the way things were): -

Then just the 4 when Syd left until the arguments began at the end of the 1970's: -

One of the greatest rock bands of all time, but so scarred by the loss of Syd Barrett.

Here's a link to them at the recent G8 concert where they closed the show because their the best (sad we all have to get older though) and I've tried posting the picture but it keep disappearing, so you'll have to click the link instead: -

yea syd and dave would teach each other riffs and techniques during lunchtimes, yea it got to the stage where syd would just be on stage and randomly play guitar

Rodger waters was what ruined it all after syds departure

yep it was quite sad as there was alot of tributes to him although he was too screwed to do anything

yea his eyes were permanently dilated due to never really coming down from his past trips, it does sound quite exiting but i would never try it ,

Oh right I see and yes Gilmour only dabbled really, so it was unlikely that he'd end up doing any long term harm.

Well the same kind of thing happened with The Beatles and when you have a group of people who spend so much time together over a long period, it's only natural that there'd be arguments and disagreements.

Especially as both Waters and Gilmour were such talented writers. But after all the nasty court cases with Waters desperately trying to prevent the others from touring as Pink Floyd because as far as he was concerned the band was finished, it's a real miracle that they all agreed to appear together again for one last time and give each other a hug in front of everyone.

I've heard that Waters found it deeply upsetting visiting Syd, because he'd go from being normal one minute to asking who the hell he was and not having any recollections of the past. I also believe that Syd didn't want to remember or talk about the past either and so the band were pretty much encouraged to stay away.

I couldn't resist buying this issue of 'Uncut' last year and I read all there was written about Pink Floyd: -

Posted Image

(Well my misses was back and forth the hospital having scans and being kept in for observation before the birth of our new baby girl last September. So it gave me something else to read on the ward apart from Mini Mag) LOL

Anyway David Gilmour even mentioned the day that Syd walked into the recording studios whilst they were recording 'Wish You Were Here' (which was damned ironic since the album, like many was dedicated to him). Syd had shaved most of his hair off and had put on a great deal of weight. He also upset them a little as he was jumping up and down pretending to brush his teeth with his fingers.

So anyway once he'd calmed down they played him some of the tracks they'd recorded and he said something like 'yes that was good, although it was a bit too long'. Gilmour found that to be very funny, since Pink Floyd were known for their long songs or trips as they tend to be called.

Well I just can't resist posting this YouTube video though as it's from a TV show I watched when I was a little kid (it was like 'The Wizard Of Oz' on acid, but I guess most things were psychedelic and way out back then in the late 60's/early 70's) and it starred the boy (Jack Wild) who played the artful dodger in 'Oliver'. Anyway someone's added a famous Pink Floyd track and it seems to work very well together: -

:yinyang:

RIP Jack Wild too as his fame came to an end once he grew up and after years of battling alcoholism he died recently. There's quite a few tributes to him on YouTube and many made Marie (my misses) cry a little as their quite sad: -

:)

(But thinking back I had a very similar Beatle type hair style when I was a little kid, because I'd refuse to get my hair cut (yes I was a trendy/groovy kid alright)
