I wouldn't call fitting twin carbs mutilating.

But then if you don't want to mutilate it stick with a single carb?

First things first, a real mini can be any type of mini, not just mk1's.
Personally, I prefer the mk1's, but there are other mk's out there.

Ok, as far as I know, a twin carb conversion can be done to a standard mk1, however, this affects originality should you want to sell/show the car. Buying a Mk1 Cooper is by no means a cheap option, as these cars are known to fetch well above £10,000 if in good condition - even this will not buy a concours car, for this you are looking at between £15,000 to £20,000, maybe more. Even with some of these cars, the originality can vary, some will fetch higher prices just because of the authenticity of the shell and the cooper name. You could find, as we have with my dad's mk2, that parts from other cars have mysteriously attached themselves to the car - fair enough if it's just a daily runabout, but it's not original and as we have found - can cause some major problems.

The simplest option in my mind would be to switch from the single carb to twin carbs on your mk1, sure, this will affect originality, but if you do want to sell the car or enter it into shows, you can remove the car, but this means re-tuning the car to run on a single car again.

Coming from personal experiance, I've had a few dilemmas regarding parts on my car, what you really have to consider when performing a modification to a car is - is it a sensible mod? will this help the car? and most importantly in your case - How easy is it to undo the mod?

Hope this helps,
Matt

hmm.. i kno u can put twin carbs on a mki.. and imo the mki is the best mini because it has the sexier small rear lights and the epix 848 engine :D but a 1275 mki i could live with...

i got offered £4.5k for my car.. but if i was to sell it wiht a alternator, lcb, twin carbs it would be about £3k..

so why not have a mki, and a mki cooper :D

Yep, Twin carbs will not give you any more power and it certainly wont be noticeable unless you're doing more work the engine in the first place like changin the Cam/working the Head.

As for prices, well with the current credit crunch/recession car prices are all over the place and surely you could find a bargain right now?

However saying that it is the 50th Birthday of the Mini this year, so I guess people will start asking silly prices as a result?

if anything, 'cooperising' your mk1 with authentic mk1 cooper parts would put value on it, surely... i know its not a real cooper but if the parts are genuine i cant see the problem... nice period modifications always add character to the car, and if you keep all the original parts, if you were to sell it, you could sell them with the car, or put them all back on and sell the copper bits....
