I was just looking through my old threads for something.
Wow: how far I have come!! This used to be hard stuff to me. Now I'm not stressed about it at all.

You could buy a kit just to be on the safe side but then again you could get away with just removing some shims to take the play out as very often this is all that is needed, when was the last time it was greased, if used regularly then it should be greased every 3 months, this stops premature wear.I was just looking through my old threads for something.

Note that the lower ball joints have a spring in them... this spring pushes the pin against the cup.
as the ball joint wears away, the spring pressure takes up the slop... as it wears some more.. the spring takes up the slop...
If the bottom ball joint has gone far enough to fail the MOT, its because it is well worn out... reshimming the bottom balljoint is certainly not recommended in this circumstance.
The top ball joint has no spring, and whipping a shim out can take out some slop..
