I was charged £300 for parts and labour on my mini, that included a new verto clutch kit and the seal, just a shame it didn't fix the problem as the problem was high crankcase pressure (caused by worn rings), pushing oil through the seal.

It could also be that the seal was installed incorrectly, i've heard they are very sensitive and should be protected from the primary gear as its pushed into place as the surface of the seal is very weak/sensitive.

Sincerely hope mine is not worn rings as the engine is a new build!

My fly wheel will. Not. Budge. Like... Two pulleys destroyed and nothing. My seal is only slightly seeping I think. Do I change or not. I'm tempted to refit becuase I honestly can't get the flywheel to budge. I'm at the stage where I could damage the flywheel now

Make sure the engine is in the correct position and rent or buy the Guessworks puller

Have you removed the keyed washer?  Have you got the key way horizontal? Have you locked the flywheel in place? Was the puller parallel to the flywheel? And were the pullers Mini specific?

if yes to all those then you need one of these http://www.guess-wor...play.htm?id=501

The guessworks puller - captures and retains the popping bits - so nothing heavy comes off and hits feet etc.  ( I recommend this great tool and the original hydraulic puller as the best to move stubborn flywheels)

Sometimes pressure applied by the pulley AND time works in your favour.  The old story tighten it up, go away and have a cup of tea ( some modern tranlations substitute beer) then come back - add a little more tightening and go away etc

Sometimes ball joints let go in this fashion also _( loudly)..  But on the flywheel if you use most pullers you need to wire the set up to the transfer case ( I use wire through the starter opening)

If you have any doubt about the quality of the threads - clean them up and run a correctly threaded tap through them ( and sorry offhand i don't know the thread size tpi etc). Making sure the bolts go through surely and equally ( parallel as Nick says above) is vital.

Good luck

Thanks Nick! Yes to all of those :) I've just contacted Guess works so it's looking like that will be the option. The other two pulleys were both mini specific but like cheese.. despite being labelled heavy duty lol.

KAD puller is a serious piece of kit too.
In my experience the flywheels don't 'fly off' with the beefy rigid pullers like KAD and Guessworks. Just a big 'crack' and the flywheel's off but barely moved on the crank taper.

Persevere.. not replacing the seal when you are this far in is a false economy....

Couple quid worth of seal can be a major head a he later

I have had one loaded and tightened a bit more every day for almost 2 weeks, then I used 'plumber's freeze' alternately with some heat from a butane torch, then tightened a bit more, then hit it through the starter aperture using a big lump hammer and a steel bar, then more tightening and plumber's freeze/butane torch again.

I was at the point of considering a big angle grinder when, suddenly, off it popped.

that was on a 1997 MPI.
