Technically not much, but the castings are different and the bits which are stuck onto them are also a little different...

The one thing which has most impact is the fact that the Distributors are different, and are not intercheable.

Isn't the A+ the one that is in the Maestro? The main difference between that an the A series is the location of the gearbox, with the one on the maestro being lumped on the side.

Nah, the A+ was used in later minis too. The MG Metro engine for instance is an A+.

However, they do use A+ engines in Maestros, with a gearbox on the side.

not true Skatiechik - A series is whats fitted to earlier minis (about pre 81), all Mini's after that have the A+.

There's extra strengthening ribs on the block, different dizzy drives and clamp mechanisms, different alternator brackets, and I believe there were some differences internally (journal size, con rod differences, not sure what exactly).

The Maestro/Montego range did have A-series engines with the boxes chucked on the side, and were all A+, but A+ does not denote that it was from a Maestro, just that its the 'upgraded' A series.

Also, the A series out of those cars isn't interchangable with the Mini A series, I think the only thing you can use is the head.

Ive got an A seires block and I recently was told that its a formular Junior block that has some casting details at the back of the block which enables it to have a kind of dry sump lubrication system.
