Mini doors in Japan but have larger gaps to allow the standard internal hinges to work normally.

Didn't know that about Japanese Minis. Was the door aperature larger or the door smaller?

The Japanese dummy hinges have much larger clearance gaps in between the two separate halves and are not joined together with a hinge pin. This allows the door to pivot normally on the internal hinge arc but the large dummy hinge gaps don't look very good from close up.

This white retro-style Japanese MPI Mini (Link below) has external hinges and what looks like sliding windows in the doors or maybe they are fake too?..............I believe sliding window conversion kits are also available in Japan but have yet to find them on sale anywhere?

The mini in that link has entire mk1 doors and door pillars/ A panels. It isn't however a mk1 shell. Just shows what can be done if you have the time and skills.

I don't think so it's still got MK3 locks. It looks like they've fitted MK1 sliding mechanisms with different shaped glass. I know you can get a conversion kit to do this with polly windows I see no reason glass couldn't be cut in the same shape.

That's not to say that you could fit MK1 door frame to a latter shell if you wanted to.

They are Mk3 onwards doors and side panels..............check the interior picture, also the rear side windows are taller Mk3 type right up to the roof gutter (Mk1/2 has a gap between window/gutter), but the Japanese do also often go to the trouble of putting the Mk1 curved radius on the front bottom corner of the door and A panel which creates the illusion of a genuine Mk1/2 quite well. Most UK conversions to external hinges still have the sharp corner of the Mk3 onwards doors/A panel.

According to BMH a Mk1 lookalike bodyshell with external hinges but late type floorpan, etc will be available quite soon (already nicknamed the Mk1.5)
