Just to add, there is nothing to say that this car hasn't been reshelled at a point in time many years ago when the practise wasn't illegal.

That's not a re-shell Jammy, it's simple ringing. There's nothing from a '68 car there apart from the chassis plate (if it's even got that).

I have just emailed this seller asking for a full ist of restoration work done... it shocks me that people think they can rip people off by "tricking" them into thinking they are buying a fully restored classic :)

He has replied to my email on ebay with the following:

"Hello
now iam selling this car for my nephew who is in Austrailia i have rang him to get a a answer to your question this is a 83 shell with 68 plates which i didnt know about all i know is that it took 5 years to do from scratch"

Have told him that he is asking a ridiculous amount of money for a car that he is stating is a "classic" when infact it is 20 years younger than he states! And he should know the fact before posting false information about a product

My point being that if this reshell/ringing was done in 1983 then it simply isn't illegal.

Can't you add any number plate to a car provided that it doesn't make the car seem NEWER?
So the plate could have been legally added to a 1980's car.

I know that's not what's being discussed - it's that fact that he's selling as a 40 year old car.

Technically nothing he's done is illegal, but it is incredibly dishonest to try to sell it as something that it's not, at a vastly inflated price.

That may not be true: it could have been reshelled legally but it's still fraud to try and pass it off as something it isn't and I doubt DVLA would be particularly happy to knowingly give it tax exempt status. "I'm selling this car for...." & *and he should know the fact before posting false information" - bit of a conflict there, think I know who the Police would hold to account though.

As for dodgy stuff being offered on TMF, we're in a similar situation to Ebay - we've no control over what's put in users' posts. Buyer beware has to apply unfortunately and it's up to all of to report anything we know or suspect is dodgy to discourage the toerags.

So is it 82 or 83? Or maybe he doesn't even know? This seems like suspect, my betting is its a stolen motor with a plate change.
