Have you run a compression test to see if anything is cracked inside (between cylinders, so most charge is wasted) and have you checked the engine is free to turn over? If there is no smell of fuel, the fuel must be burnt overcoming a resistance. Also, you are CERTAIN there isnt a fuel leak in the boot or under the car?

Just checked compression on warm engine (checked/set valve clearance on cold engine first)Have you run a compression test to see if anything is cracked inside (between cylinders, so most charge is wasted) and have you checked the engine is free to turn over? If there is no smell of fuel, the fuel must be burnt overcoming a resistance. Also, you are CERTAIN there isnt a fuel leak in the boot or under the car?
145, 140, 125, 110 (it's still a standard bore, so I don't think ever been rebuilt since new in 69 or so)
I did have the head off last year and had the valves/seats ground
I know #1 and 2 aren't great, but I don't think thats the problem
