Hey guys,

Im considering getting a moped now, since i have a bit of money. plus i want some freedom, but i dont know where to start, what order i need to do things, or even how much it costs, if anyone could explain what i need to do, preferably in order, and how much it would cost, that would be awsome.

im also slightly confused about the law regarding motorcycles at 16.
ie, would i be able to have a 49.9cc aprilia SX50 or RS50, or do i have to stick to the normal moped/scooter style bike, with CVT transmition, and limited to 31mph, or can you limit any 50cc to 31mph and ride that?

i think you can see my confusion... lol

Thanks guys, any help would be awsome, i am so confused lol

At 16, you are legally allowed to ride a Moped... (obv. i know =])

A moped is a motorcycle that has the following features:

* Maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) (about 31 miles per hour (mph))
* an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc (So no big bore kits!)
* it can be moved by pedals, if the moped was first used before 1 September 1977 (e.g. the old puch maxi's - I have four )

Before you can ride one, you will need a valid provisional licence and a valid CBT - Compulsory Basic Training which costs roughly between £90-£130 depending on company and whether you use your own motorcycle or theirs...

At 16, you will only be allowed out on a 50cc moped and therefore am not sure if you are allowed to go onto riding a 50cc manual bike (would have thought you could but better ask first)

Your CBT may only be valid for a year or so (when I did mine, it was valid for two years but the laws may have changed)

Any more help, let me know.

Thought I should just add;

A CBT certificate obtained on a moped is also valid for motorcycles once the rider has reached the age of 17 years and has the necessary licence.

From reading that, it seems that once you hit 17 years of age, you can then ride a motorcycle but am not sure if that allows you to ride up to 125CC - best bet is to ask the test centre where you wish to do your CBT.

at 16 you can ride anything that is 50cc and restricted to 30mph, it can be either an automatic or manual geared bike/moped.
when youre 17, the CBT that you passed at 16 lets you ride any 125cc machine, upto 15bhp. Things like the Aprilia RS125 can produce 30+bhp when they have been de restricted.

Personally i would get a manual bike, as this will give you more choice later on (and you might not need to re-do the test.)

Just be prepared for drivers not giving you room when overtaking etc etc just because you can only do 30mph. As long as you dont die before youre 17 its all good.

i personally think that anyone wanting to drive should spend at least a year on a moped/bike, it really makes you alert and shows you how bad some people's driving skills really are, when you get pulled out on, cut up, nudged, pushed, squashed and run into the kerb a few times =] you will learn to use your mirrors and pay attention when driving :-

its all good fun, just remember cars dont filter traffic as well as bikes. unless they are minis of course :P

also, i'd recommend an older 50cc manual bike, newer bikes like rs50's etc are nice and quick for a 50, but they're just like them mr2's dressed up as ferraris, look nice but you look like a massive *male chicken* when you meet the real mccoy, and they depreciate worse than a piece of mouldy cheese. get a 90's enduro style bike, like a DT50, TS50 etc. they are great fun to ride (on and off road) and they are rare so they really hold their value, i had a '95 TS50 bought for £600 sold a year and a half later for £650, could of got more, was a really nice bike

I picked up a Kikker Hardknock a month ago and been riding that. Def nothing to be embarrassed about. Kind of same laws here, 50cc max + 35mph max. However I went with the 110cc version and just ground off the casting number and restamped my own. It's also got a 4 speed, semi auto, with a suicide shifter. Loads of fun to ride. I ended up dropping $1300usd on it.

Anyway, they make these kits over in California, USA then you put them together. The used to produce a 49cc, and 110cc version. Now they are producing 125cc and 200cc versions. However there are lot's of people that have already built them and a reselling them. Mine tops out at 55mph now, but I have a different sprocket I will be switching on soon to get a little more top end. Anyway, thought I would throw this out there, I know there are a few people in Europe riding them. Cheers.

i have a little honda sj50 which i bought for the same reason its does 30ish mph 110mpg, admitaly it is poor but one of my freinds had a peogot one which was derestriced (55mph capable) the police caught him and he got done and lost his licence so if you do get one leave it restricted (they are all restricted from factory) i paid £200 for mine and 20months on ive spend £250 on it (2 mots 2 lots of tax pair of tyres brake pads etc) and ive done 17,000 miles on it thats 30miles minum per day. great valve for money but once i fix the damage i will be selling it as ive passed my bike test. also buy a decent jacket ive had 13 offs and never hurt myself yet due to good etc

good luck

There isn't any point owning a bike (goes for mopeds too) unless you get yourself decent kit.

You can find many clearance products within shops and on eBay and some which are shop soiled (maybe have a pen mark on them) for decent prices...

Don't skimp and think u'll be ok, you never know when u'll come off. ATGATT!

I know about the jackets and correct clothing, the one time my uncle didnt wear his jacket he came off and ended up in hospital, that said, it still put him off riding for a few years, but he always wears the right clothing.

i was planning on getting a leather one with removable padding so i can wear it as a normal jacket aswell, so i can get my moneys worth if nothing else lol

Where is a good place to look to get 2nd hand ped's? i just cant find anywhere good to look, nothing like piston heads anyway.
