as in the topic description, i typed in my cregistration number on the dvla website and it said
vehichle status:unlicenced
does this mean it is sorned, because as far as im aware it is (they both are)
or does this mean that im going to be fined for not paying tax

im a bit scared of asking them direct because i dont want to shoot myself in the foot

As far as I know, UNLICENSED means unlicensed- when your car is SORN'ed it says "SORN not due".

Don't know if that means you will get a fine though.

Unlicenced is where the vehicle is neither taxed or sorn'd... You are unable to sorn or tax it on the Direct Gov as it will probably come up with technical difficulty etc...

Try going down to your post office and getting a form from there... Its worth a try.

Good luck.

Psst: They should have sent you a form telling you your tax will expire which would ask you if you would like to sorn the vehicle, pay £66 for six months or more for 12 months.

thanks for the replies and help
it says this on the dvla website under faq

What happens if a vehicle is not taxed and a SORN has not been declared?

It is an offence to be the registered keeper of a vehicle that is unlicensed and where SORN has not been declared. Where an offence has been committed, the registered keeper will be required to pay a late licensing supplement and any outstanding arrears of vehicle excise duty (VED). For more information about SORN, please go the DVLA website http://www.dvla.gov....es/vehlicnc.htm

i didnt like the sound of this as i have 2 minis which are currently unlicenced, but i bought them both unlicenced
i called my dad and he says there is no way i can be liable for the car being unlicenced while i didnt own it
and he thinks i sent of the sorn application when i got my rio
but the other needed renewing on the first of march, im not fully sure but it was around that time i had it bought for me

You have to re-sorn it when the car changes ownership, even if it's sorn when you buy it you still need to re do it >_<

Indeed you do - you need to either obtain form V890 from your local vehicle licensing post office or you can download it from here. If you have recently bought the vehicles in question you will be fine - just fill in the form and send it to the address on the form. Alternatively, SORN only came into being in January 2004, so if the vehicle was off the road (un-taxed) at this point, it would not need to have been declared SORN. I'm not sure, however, if a change of ownership since that date requires a SORN notification to be made. Maybe a call to your local DVLA office would clear this up??? If you do this, it would be good if you could post the response so that others may benefit!

If both cars are unlicenced and without SORN you are liable for all the tax due on both cars from the date you bought them until the present, plus a fine for each. How did you get the cars to you and where are they stored? It is very common for a car to be untaxed when you buy it because the previous owner will often claim the remaining tax back the day you collect it. It's your responsibility to make sure that the car you buy is either taxed or SORN.

Didn't it come in 31st January 1998? I filled in a SORN form the other day and it said at the bottom that if the vehicle has been used/taxed since then, it will need a SORN, unless im confused..

Didn't it come in 31st January 1998? I filled in a SORN form the other day and it said at the bottom that if the vehicle has been used/taxed since then, it will need a SORN, unless im confused..

"Statutory Off Road Notification, or SORN as it is known, came into effect as at 31st January 1998, as the DVLA were concerned that vehicles not taxed were not stored or used on public roads .
When a vehicle's tax runs out and is not renewed or a Tax Disc is returned, the Registered Vehicle Keeper is required to make a Statutory Off Road Notification, that the vehicle is not kept on public roads. Failing to declare SORN can result in a fine.
Only vehicles that were actually taxed on or after 31st January 1998 and not subsequently re-taxed need to declare SORN.
Any vehicles that were not taxed at 31st January 1998, or subsequently, do not require SORN declaration. Once you re-tax though it will then always need SORN declared in any future un-taxed periods."

Automatic £80 penalty for overdue vehicle road fund discs/SORN started from 1st January 2004.
There is a penalty of £80, reduced to £40 if paid within 28 days. If you continue without road tax or a SORN after receiving this penalty notice, you are liable to a further penalty of £1,000, even if the car has not been on the road. The £1,000 is an irreducible minimum figure.
Until 2004, the registered keeper of a vehicle could only be fined if their car was seen on the street without a valid tax disc on display. Sinse 2004 the DVLA is able to generate fine notices automatically using its vehicle licencing and registered owner database. Anyone who does not renew their tax disc on time will be assumed to be guilty unless the DVLA has received a written notification that the vehicle has either been sold (following the sale to another party who then becomes the registered keeper) or has received a SORN from the registered keeper.

Of course very little of our road tax collected is spent on the roads as originally intended but France seems to have the best system.....................NO road tax required on cars!!

I suppose it could be all above board but I don't think there's much chance that a '93 car was unlicenced in '98 really. That is if it's the Rio you are talking about. I don't believe that when a car which is legally un-licenced (as in it was never taxed or SORN between '98 and the present) is sold the new keeper is required to SORN it any more than the original keeper was but I'm not certain about that.

Apologies for causing confusion over the date SORN came into being - I'm sure I got that off one of the government websites, but I cant remember which one and can't find it again.

If a car hasn't been licenced since before January 1998 it doesn't need to be SORNed, even if you change ownership.
