I have a 1973 1275gt it basically has a cooper s engine in it with twin 1/2" carbs & is running at around 76bhp.

I havent run the car over winter & now it wont start (when the battery is connected & the ignition turned on I can't hear the pump working) so I guess it's goosed!

The orginal electric su items are around £60-70

but there seems to be a large selection of other pumps avalible.

has anyone got any recomendations?

Thanks
Craig.

Does it have an SU pump on it now? If so remove it, take off the bottom and clean up/flick the points a few times - they can usually be persuaded back into action.

If that fails then there are copy versions but personally I would move to the solid state Facet pump - the small square one. You would need no more than the fast road version and they don't need any pressure regulation. Basically fit and forget - very good pumps.

Thanks! how about fitting? is there any new mount / holes to drill? is it fitted in the same location as the old pump?

Personally I'd buy the SU replacement controller. This is an electronic controller for the pump that replaces the points unit and is made by SU (BFS). It fits directly into the existing pump body and makes it much more reliable.

But probably not on a car that has an electric pump already fitted and plumbed and therefore may not have a mounting point/hole for a mechanical pump?!

bought the solid state cube type for fast road.

I know the standard would probably be ok but with twin 1/2" carbs I thought the fast road pump would suit best!

I'm I right in thinking it will bolt through the existing holes in the rear subframe where the old fuel pump was? or will I have to drill some new?

also bought some rubber mounts & filter

Thanks for the help
Craig.

I think there is only one hole in the subframe so you'll probably need to add another or fabricate a bracket. I think DKLawson did a similar conversion - PM him for some pics!

You may be able to use that or the original holes in teh subframe (I'm starting to remember what is looks like under there!)

There are photos of other people's installs on the following links:

Thats a great help! thanks!!!

I have just read the instructions & it highly recomends instaling an oil pressure regulator (I think) for saftey incase the engine stops.

what do you guys think about this?

Thanks
Craig.

OK I removed the old pump today. But I think I'll have to make a steel bracket like you said. Or take off the wheel & bottom damper inorder to remove the cone so I can drill two holes through the side of the subframe (I think this could be the best & easiest option).

Should I just put the earth lead that comes from the existing cars loom onto the new earth lead on the pump?

Went to B&Q, they want £25 for the smallest cut of steel!!!!

(kind of wish I just bought the direct replacement (would have been easier)lol.

Take the base of the rear seat out, drill two holes through the seat base panel from underneath so that you know they will be3 in the right place and bolt up directly through the seat panel. All you need is a drill the right size, two nuts, bolts and washers and someone to hold the screwdrive or spanner on the other side. It's that easy. Make sure you earth the pump too.

my father made me a ss bracket & I have connected everything up. However the pump doesnt seem to be working. I have earthed the pump through a bolt that holds the bracket to the subframe.

I'm now thinking that the old unit was ok & the problem lies with the power supply to the pump.

has anyone got any idea's?

thanks
Craig.

On a rubber mounted subframe there may well be no path to earth there. Did the old pump not have two wires to it (+ve and earth)?
