Mini City 92 - Aftermarket dash with 3 clocks

My Rev Counter has started giving it big pendulum swings as it changs (either up or down) then settles onn the revs i'm using, engine performance seems unaffected aside from today when it started missing badly then stalled all the while it was missing the rev counter was all over the place, after getting it started it again slight missing then fine (again rev counter mental when missing). Hope this makes sense any questions if you want me to try and clear it up a little >_<

Only thing I can think of is a poor connection along the line for the rev counter but can't find one so far, but as a newbie, question? where does it connect to in the engine bay, i assume its either the dizzy or the coil?

by the way has elec ignition with new rotor asrm, dizzy cap, and leads, was rolling roaded about a month ago was fine then but told the weights in the dizzy were weak and would need to budget for a new one in 5/6 months time, if that has any relevance?

Thanks in advance

It will more than likely be a dodgy connection on the coil. Take the wires off one by one, clean the connection and if the spade feels a bit loose crimp it a bit with some pliers where it pushes on to the coil. Smear a bit of copper grease to keep the damp out and see how it goes.

As above, make sure all the connections are clean and tight. The tach may not have any problems of its own but MAY be indicating problems that are elsewhere in the ignition system.

Yeah I had this feeling of a problem elsewhere, as like I said it was going all over the place when it started to miss and die >_<

Suggestions to check? worth making sure earth cable of battery is tip top? such as.

Only thing I can think of is if your wipers don't park by themselves, then replace the wiper motor park-switch because that has a very funny effect on the rev counter and clocks when it fails.

Mainly because it runs on the same fuse/circuit and it can either cause gauge problems, or cause that main fuse to blow or in extreme cases electrical fires.

Mini Spares supply replacement park-switches, plus a new mulit-plug/socket connector and part of the wiring loom too if required.

It's an Omen I tell thee! lol

Anyway you'll find the park-switch attached to the rear of the wiper motor unit: -

Hopefully the packing in of your park-switch is the cause of your rev counter problem.

Bump

Eventually got hold of a new park switch, fitted, now wipers work better and park, but rev counter still erratic :D

aside from the rev counter itself being duff, anyone one got more suggestions before I order a new one?

Thanks :D
