Im planning on fitting a set of MB's to my mini and need to know whether a pair of 7.9" vented disks and 4 pot calipers will fit behind them? Any-one have any ideas as to whether they will fit?

You will need 7.5 discs for 10" wheels I have just fitted KAD 4 pots and the only wheel That I managed to fit over them are mini 1100 special's................

I think Minisports are a little smaller so they might do................ =]

Working on callipers at the moment that will fit an 8.4" disc behind 10" wheels ...... ok so it won;t work for all 10" wheels, so we have designed it to be easily modified to suit your own wheels =]

Take a look at our 13" kit ;D

Question!
I have a 1981 austin mini HL Auto, which has a set of standard 10" wheels etc.
I heard from various sources that i have only two options for disc brakes

1. cooper s 7.5" (the whole kit)...costing round £500
2. go up to 12" wheels (+tyres costing £200 or thereabouts) and second hand 8.4" (around £100)...(but then I need the spacers..and probably hi-lo's to adjust the high of the car..etc..)

Which do you think is worth doing?
any alternative....?
like modifying something somewhere so I can have the cheap 8.4" discs on 10" wheels?

The kit you mention only fits if you already have the correct hubs... :D

That is a conversion kit from 8.4" disc brakes (12" wheels) to 7.5" disc brakes (10" wheels). You need the bigger kit if you are currently on drums.

I have 7.9" discs with KAD 4 pot calipers behind 10"x5" GB alloy wheels with no problems.

Darn!
i think mine's 10x3.5J!!
can any one confirm that (1981 austin HL auto)
does this mean the wheels are too narrow for 7.9" disc fitment??

I take it you mean steel wheels? They may fit - I think KAD have a template on their site somehwere you can print and offer up to you wheel. The width (3.5J) won't make much difference (although the offset might).

To go from drums to 7.9" wheels could prove expensive - you would have to follow your 12" route posted earlier and then get new alloy calipers (from £250/set), have the discs turned down (£20) and get new pads (from £25/set)

To be honest if you are sticking with 3.5" steel wheels and presumably 145r10 tyres then you really don't need anything as fancy as 7.9" brakes. You can sometimes pick the Cooper S 7.5" ones up as a full setwith hubs for around £300 on ebay.

The other alternative is the 998 Cooper disc brake. They are not much better in brake efficiency terms, but they don't need constant adjustment like the drums do and with decent pads are a good compromise.
As the original cooper 997/998 had 3.5 x 10" wheels they fit easily and you don't need the expensive 'S' set-up to fit them.

I think you would still need different hubs too - I doubt the cost would be much less than 'S' discs to buy a secondhand set (if you can find any) and then refurb them.

It is commonly thought that twin leading shoe drums will out perform the 7" cooper discs - they were poor even when they were brand new and 'the latest thing'!

Yes and no... The 7" brake is by far the rarest brake to get hold of, IMO...
I never drove it myself but it is said that they are not better than drums (some insist they are worse ).

To switch from drum to discs you need:
- pair of disc brake hubs
- pair of cooper S drive flanges
- pair of cooper S calipers
- pair of outer disc brake CV joints
- set of pads
- pair of 7.5" discs
- wide/spacered rear drums & longer wheels studs)
- smaler rear brake cylinders

Or... the same parts for a 7" brake (minus spacered drums).
Or... the same parts for a 8.4" brake (+ 12" wheels)
Or... as above if you feel you need four pots and 7.9" discs.

So basicaly you need what's in this kit: http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=37121

Most 3.5" wheels should fit the 7.5" S brake, there are however some early ones that don't. It's realy a matter of try & error. But I think yours should fit fine as they are most probably the later ones :)
