If memory serves correct, and this was some years ago, but when i fitted a new manifold gasket (the correct way round, I assume because i've never removed it again), it gave off some fumes/smoke while it bedded in, soon cleared up. But the stench fair burned your nose if you were anywhere near it.

This really isn't running right, though, something in the engine bay is making crazy 'fraaappp ap app ap' noises and it sounds majorly bad.

Argh!
Ok, I went out, I've flipped the gasket over (looked fairly useable), tightened everything up really really tight, connected ALL wiring and plumbing connectors (I might have missed the throttle potentiometer last time) and tried to start the engine.
All I get is a 'chugchugchug' and the engine doesn't catch!
Can anybody suggest what could cause this, and I'll check it out?
I also fitted a new teardrop mount while I was at it, which involved moving the ECU - reckon I might have screwed up there?
Thankyou!

Quick update: As far as I can tell, the fuel pump isn't pumping and I don't think I have a spark. All four fuses next to the ECU are intact, as are all the fuses in the cabin fuse box.
What fault could cause the ECU-related systems to fail but the independent ones (starter, fuel guage, dash etc) to work properly?
Cheers.

Has your inertia switch dropped out? Just press to reset.

I pressed it a few times, at the moment it's in the not-popped up position. Is that good or bad?
PS. Sorry, I'm knackered, not thinking too clearly

Sorry, blatant bump. I really have to get this running by this afternoon, and all I know so far is it'll be an electrical problem, and should have something to do with the ECU/relays, or something along those lines.
Anybody able to shed some light on probable causes?
Starter turns, no fuel pump, no spark.
Thankyou!

Can you hear the pump priming bit like a "zzzzzzzzzz" noise when you turn on your ignition s your ignition lights come on?
