Hello, i have now realised why after every trip in my beloved mini i get out feeling very sick, a pounding headache and it feels like my eyes are going to explode. L2B nearly killed me.. literally!

The exhaust does blow around the Y-piece area, particulary Y-piece to link pipe joint, i have tried to prevent this using gun-gum which i applied when i put the exhaust on and also afterwards. Currently there is a very minor blow coming from this area. is it possible this small ammount of blowing is traveling back underneath the car and up the gear gaitor? but surely when i am not stationary it would go straight out the back underneath the car. Yesterday i drove with the front vents open and rear windows open also in order to get a good flow of fresh air, but even after a 25 munite journey my synases were pounding and i felt very sick. This only seems to be a recent problem even though this is probably the most air tight the exhaust has ever been :S

Any help appreciated as i leave my mini and take the bicycle everywhere :P

Thanks, Kit

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is cumulative, so if you've suffered with it you have to wait for your body to replace the red effected red blood cells before you're back to normal. Do you have open engine breathers? That's the only other route for fumes out of the engine other than the exhaust.

What clamps are you using on the Y piece? The flat strip type are better & can benefit from a slice of beer can or similar if they tighten fully.

I would take the exhaust off from the manifold and refit it, take your time and maybe use a splodge of exhaust paste. Otherwise you'll still be leaking fumes whatever you do.

I had the same problem as you for a while, I found out it was my manifolds were not sat quite right so it was leaking in through the dash. I check if my manifold is sealed ok by spraying some carb cleaner around above and below the manifold (trying to keep off the exhaust..), a drop in revs tells me I have a leak.

:P

Oh yes and they do seal better like Ethel said!

I have seen Y-pieces leak and the fumes come up through the gear gaitor if it's not properly clamped down - might be worth a check.

when i have my playmini dtm on the tail pipes sit about an inch behind the rear bumper - the mini does smell rather of fumes

whereas when i have the cheap rc40 fitted it sticks out a little bit past the bumper and i dont have a problem - no smells.

that may be your problem.

You know what, this explains an awful lot to the smell of the inside of Paddy. >_<

I've got an almost total exhaust replacement inbound (leaving the MPI exhaust manifold, replacing everything else!) and I'll see what that fixes. Also, try driving around for a bit and then wave your hand around the gear stick gator. If there is a Y-piece leak then it should feel pretty hot with the exhaust gases blowing out!

Dont forget the main point of fumes entering is the great big hole in the fire wall where half the carb pokes through into the cabin behind the speedo ! !

I've had this before too, it's not nice and as you say gives you a bad headache.. needs fixing.

Mine was also the boot seal. If you've cut bigger holes in the rear parcel shelf, this doesn't help either. It's worth remembering that originally, the parcel shelf was effectively sealed from the boot. There was even small bits of foam fitted between the shelf and 'C' posts (which get damp and rot out the back panel) :P

Anyway, do make sure you've at least got a decent boot seal. I've found the later type seal that pushes onto the body as being the best.

Thanks for all of the help above!!!!!! :P
