Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum but I've just joined because I need some help!

I turned 18 in January and I've just been driving for a year last week. I currently drive a BMW 1 series (116i SE) but I am looking at changing the car within the next 6 months or so and want to purchase a Mini GP.

I've had a look round, and for an 18 year old on this car, the insurance is between £5,000 - £39,000!! for a driver of my age.

I just wondered if anyone on here has been in the same position as me wanting to get insured on a performance mini. I'm not sure if my insurance will drop in price when I turn 19 or not, but I don't know if there is anything I can do to reduce my insurance anyway.

I'm not a boy racer or anything (which I know doesn't really count for anything when getting a quote from an insurance company), but I love that car and would love to own one.

I can afford to pay for the car plus around £2000 for insurance a year, but I don't really want to have to go much over that (If that at all!!!).

I haven't got any speeding fines or penalties etc either which I guess is one of the things that pushes the price up!

Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

Thanks!
Lewis

What's a Mini GP? :)

If you can't afford the insurance...get a different car.

Unfortunatley for you, insurance companies don't really care if young drivers have no points or speeding fines. All that matters to them is the fact that you fall in the age bracket that has the most accidents.

All I can suggest is shop around and go straight to companies instead of using comparison websites, reason being is comparison websites charge for use so the insurance is only going to cost more,

Try well known specialists such as Adrian Flux, Performance Direct etc.

If you still can't afford it then why not save your money and wait for a few years. it will drop when you build up some no claims bonus.

They aren't as bad priced as you think :)

I've only been trying comparison sites at the moment so maybe I should ring a few companies direct.

I found my current car unbelievably hard to get insured on...

It probably wouldn't be until i'm 19 anyway, but I just want to see if I can get a decent insurance quote.

I'll ring around tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips everyone! :)

Best to call around, i had a s14 200sx silvia import at 19, Group 20+ because of the 2.0 turbo lump cost me over £3000 a year. What group is the mini?

You can buy a proper Mini and insure it for a few years for the price of a wheel for that!

You know you want one :).

I think the mini GP is insurance group 19.

Who did you get insured with?

I called up performance direct, they quoted me £5500. They then put me through to another company who quoted £9500 who then put me through to another company who said I was uninsurable due to my age! :)

You can buy a proper Mini and insure it for a few years for the price of a wheel for that!

You know you want one .

Haha, I was looking at a thread on here today of a guy whos bought a mini for £500, stripped it and is doing it up. I'm amazed and am actually tempted to do it!!

I like my 1 series at the moment, but I love the GP, so I really want to purchase one.. Only problem is the insurance which is a shame!!

Thanks everyone for trying to help! :P

I think hyperformance are good for young drivers, although, as blunt as it sounds, you aren't going to get 'cheap' insurance on a GP at your age.

Out of curiosity, how much are you paying for the 1 Series?

the general rule of thumb is that the comparison price is going to be cheaper than the actual price, it is just to entice you in! ring the companies direct! if your rents have a few cars, the cheapest thing to do might be fleet insurance!
