I'm bored with the horn I have in my mpi at the moment which is just a standard Rover 'meep'.

I'd really like musical horns - dixie horns would be great, but I don't think they'd fit under my bonnet! Is there anywhere else they can go?

I bought a set of these airhorns a while ago and they supply a fitting kit which allows you tucks them nicely behind the front number plate. The compressor is put where the original horn is mounted.

The horns are quite loud as they're 'outside' the car and not muffled by being in the engine bay....

you'll need to also keep your normal horn if they are musical air horns as they are not legal to be used as a warning device.

So when other minis have these fitted do they usually have a seperate switch somewhere to operate them? That's really what I wanted to have! As the mpi horns are played with the buttons on the steering wheel so I was hoping to keep those and the standard horn for normal 'meep meeping' and then have a little button somewhere, maybe in a centre console for when I fancied something more musical, like on a convoy or at shows.

I'm just not sure there is anywhere on an mpi they can go. Don't want them in the boot if thats even poss...

I reckon there's somfink wrong with your hooter!

My MPi horn is very loud and catches the attention of even the most cosseted cocooned lexus or range rover drivers out there, no probs.

The old diaphragm horns were pretty pathetic and a definate 'meep-meep', on a good day, but the MPi ram's horn sort are great. If it ain't loud enough, just bolt another one in next to it on the inner wing and plumb it in on the same loom.

Hmmmmm........might give that a try myself as I've got a spare horn and loom Just to make sure the euro-artics know I'm there, next time they try and squash me against the central reservation.

get your self to hafords and pick up a stebel nautilus horn. they are about £20-30, and can be pluggfed straight in, although it is advisble to use a relay.

they are very very loud! i think its around 130-40dB

Nope nothing wrong with my hooters they're it's just not musical enough.

blimey adam, that is one loud horn!! Thanks for the link, but it's not the loudness I'm after it's musicalness

halfords also sell a mini version of the nautalius which is something like 113dB
its only slightly smaller and looks like this:



only without the sparco logo.

would probably be a better option in an MPI with the amount of space under the bonnet. And its still noticably louder than the standerd.

Might have to give up on the dixie horns then

I've been thinking about a klaxon horn now, like this one.....
here which looks like it might just squeeze in somewhere in the engine bay.

Not as fun as dixie horns though

Hi amy, i put a small loud boat horn in just next to the original on my mpi and it fits a treat, then put a pull out switch like the on for the heater in the spare space on the switch panel.

The horn sounds like a old style gost train and has been great fun at thew shows and in convoys.

this came from www.airhorns.co.uk they also have lots for small musical/animal sound horns etc

Thanks john, thats the site I was looking at the klaxon horn on, it's a good website. Nice idea of the pull out switch on the switch panel, where did you source your pull out switch from if you don't mind me asking? Did you wire in the horn and switch yourself?

Brilliant link thanks Ivan. I found another website that did similar horns to that one a little while ago but can't remember what it was called. They did a horn like that which had nearly a hundred different sounds including the sound of an old bike trumpet horn and a horse neigh!!

Would be better if I can find a UK supplier though as $89 plus the shipping is a little expensive for just a fun horn!
Will just have a google search now....
