could it be then, just a noisey SU carb. i have changed the engine (about 2 months ago) and its still really loud. even putting some soundproofing stuff in didnt help. i have some loft insulation i was going to line the interior with (well the bulkhead anyway)

Bonnet insulation pads help a considerable amount, Other than that i would suggest maybe the rubber sealing ring is missing from underneath the airbox. It's almost always missing, and seals the airbox to the carb elbow.

oh right, a test would be driving round the block without the filter box then? that would indicate if it was the filter or another problem?

as for the vid, i will see what i can do!

though do u think extra insulation in the cab would be a good idea (i.e. foam/loft insulation/other sound proofing)?

No that wouldn't work, under no circumstance should you drive the car without an airbox on.

A test would be to take the airbox off and just look underneath it to see if there's a rubber sealing gasket around the mouth of the carb elbow... you'll know straight away if there is one there.

It can only help, And Whilst you're there you can check to see if all your bulkhead grommets are still in place and in good working order - They let a lot of noise in if they're split or missing. Easy to replace and cheap to buy.

i had a look at my filter and there is no rubber seal. would not having this make a difference in noise? oh and where can these be bought?

oh and all my holes have been filled with some black silicon sealant (works really well)

i managed to sort out part of the noise. i took off my air filter and put it back on again, and it seemed to get rid of that tinny noise! i have still got some roar to the car when the foot is put down. i have also discovered a hole in the upper part of the firewall (after removing the dash and sound proofing). its only about 5cm by about 3cm, but im guessing this could have quite an impact on engine bay noise in the interior?

Will have an impact plug it with something, if its rust treat is.
Urmm if you can get a video it would help, as this could be something not sealing properly.

yeah, i have been meaning to video it, but i snapped my accelerator cable, so its off the road for now. its a rust hole, its not bad, i will treat and repair it! hopefully that will cut down on some of the noise!
