I think you're getting a bit carried away with the idea here. The company was owned by BMW, but that doesn't automatically make it a BMW.

Yeh i was thinking this is how it was, and its quite clear i thought anyway, if it was a BMW things like indicators would be an optional extra :)

the key word here is "technically". if you follow the company chain back the last thing you get to is BMW

the fact was never advertised and they were never badged as BMW (in the way that some minis had rover badges) but in a tongue in cheek way we can say that "technically" they are BMW products. no one's getting shirty about it it's just one of them embarrassing family secret type things, you know like the old "yeah, but thats not his real dad !!!" type thing.

come to think of it, are the new MINIS badged as BMW ??? is it not all just MINI ???

You are quite right Anorak, the new MINI has no BMW badges on it, other than on a few of the labels/nameplates hidden under the bonnet.
Like Austin & Rover mostly did from the 1970's onwards, BMW have also kept Mini as a stand-alone brand independent of their main car range, with seperate factory and even seperate showroom premises when attached to a BMW main dealers.
