Adam i think youll have to wait until the police get back to you with a report of what went wrong with the car .. then i think your insurance will get an engineer out to have a nose at it could take a few weeks

I spoke with my brother and its pushed the dash in, so the scuttle is gone. Easy option would be to reshell it.
Its with the insurance and will be written off, its down to my brother if he wanst to save it. Rest of the the shell was pretty sound for its age.
Its just lack of experience, he doesnt take it out in the wet and wasnt expecting the back end with rubbish rear tyres to step out as he lifted off. I`m sure he'll learn from it. He's fine, just dented pride, and the g/f was ok following a trip to a&e.
Police on the other hand are being a bit harsh and want to do him for driving without due care and attention- which would mean him losing his licence if convicted. It was an accident from inexperience, not arsing about and i dont think its entirely fair- in fact if he had not lifted mid corner and just nailed it like some idiots do in a built up area he would not have had this happen.
live and learn, both me and the wife got LOO in our mini, hers at nothing more than 15 mph on a slippy roundabout, and me at a lot more- resulting in me driving straight over the rather large roundabout at quite a scary speed- so its easily done with poor rear tyres.
cheers for help

same as jay they want to do him for dangerous driving if they dont find anything wronge with the brakes and engine - but im sure they will but it is on your conciouse waiting to hear back
i hope they dont do that to your brother as its not a good thing for someone when this happens you dont expect an outcome like that!

....and you can still repair a car with a 2nd hand shell, but it will get a Q plate.

I wouldn't talk about lift off oversteer in their earshot, and without starting another discussion it wasn't the issue in a FWD Mini.
I dont see why pc plod should not hear that, they were accusing him of hitting a kerb and then losing control, LOO sounds a bit more appealing in terms of being a genuine accident.
Trying desperatley to not create a massive discussion but that generally confuses my knowledge and experience of cars (although hands up my mini experience only lasted a year or two); FWD cars such as 205's etc are generally known for their LOO and ditch finding characteristics in the wrong hands. Mid corner, lift off throttle, transfer weight to the front, rear goes light on poor tyres etc, etc we know the rest of the story.
I`ve expierenced LOO (or what i thought to be) in pretty much all of the light FWD cars i`ve had, excluding the rep barges sensible cars i`ve had.
I`m open to being corrected without taking offence though (Insert smilie i cant find it)

dont mean to sound odd but is it just me that noticed he said its a 1967 not a 1976?
yes he did, but the mini special with the orange interior was a 76 car not a 67, there was no special edition minis in 67, so we are assuming he got the date wrong

im third party only on my insurance, so never called them about it. its my fault so i just have to sort it out myself, will teach me a lesson or two (like how to fit and paint a front end!)

Ethel, thanks, understood on possibly not mentioning it if the police have a set description for LOO events (in dry circumstances). That does imply that you can't get LOO in a fwd car unless you have iniciated understeering first and then lifting off? (i`m pretty sure i`ve had LOO in both my 205 mi16 and B20 crx without understeer first) which by that case you must be driving over a FWD cars limit and cetrtainly not appropriate for public roads.
Its just in my brothers case it was in the middle of a 1 in 100 year storm event, just after a dry spell, so you have a very wet road with that nice greasy film. He lifted off mid corner and the resulting force from that deceleration was just enough for the older rear tyres to lose traction. I still belive in my head its classed as LOO, but not under normal dry conditions where the roads psv is up to scratch.
Police are getting back to him this weekend on whether he will prosecuted, if not he's he will be required to attend a driver improvement course, which isnt a bad thing IMO.
