Model:City E
Year:1988
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
My cars been making what can only be described as a rythmic puffing sound.

I dont know how to fix it to be honest becuase I dont know whats causing it.

I Suspect its the carbs not setup as it hasnt been rr'd, but I cant afford it till next month.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Hears a vid (only first 10secs are probs any use)

Thanks,
Ryan

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

Mixture too rich at idle, what needle are u running? i bet its an AAU..try setting timing at 5° -1500rpm (vacuum disconnected) and leaning mixtur a bit, but i'm pretty sure you need another needle. A rolling road session would be helpful.

I think I bought a AAU needle for it. Whats is the correct Stage one needle for a 998cc single HS4?

Thanks

What airfilter you running? If its a k&n cone then they usually need to richer needle for the carb.

Thought puffing sound from exhaust was when it runs to lean?

Paul.

From left to right:
1. Brown (normal)
2. Carbon deposits (runing rich?)
3. No deposits (running lean?)
4. Brown (normal)

Spark plugs changed about 1K ago

Doesnt this suggest Ive got other issues ontop of the current problem though?

What should I try adjusting? It only happens after its warmed up after a few minutes, Ill try adjusting the mixture scew. But is there anything else?

Thanks,
Ryan

Seems to be rich - and probably ring problem on your #2 (which is actually #3 cylinder!!) - weaken it slightly.

What air filter do you have? Have you setted timing?
If you got a KN ry an AAA needle instead of AAU and weaken mixture, sounds to me you're out of timing (too far advance) and too rich at idle.

Thanks guys!

I have a k&n filter element in the standard box. Ill get myself a AAA needle and give it ago.

Ill look into the timing as I am getting run on too. Is there a guide that shows me how to check my timing? (anything online other than haynes :) )

Sounds like an intermittent misfire to me. Coupled with one plug which you reckon is a bit sooty, I'd say you are getting an intermittent bad spark on that cylinder. Maybe worth trying different plug / lead etc, give everything a clean up in case of any tracking?

I'd swap the plug with one of the others and see if the sooty appearance follows the plug.
