I was stripping the front suspension from the front of the car, working under the wheel arch undoing a tough bolt. Tapping the spanner with a hammer, and this seal fell from somewhere. Don't know if it's anything important, but no idea where it could have come from. I've attached a picture of each side in scale with a £1 coin. Hope someone knows what it is! Thanks.

Thats a water (and dust?) seal, it sits on the CV joint and is supposed to keep water from splashing into the hub bearings. they usually split, if that one is split that would explain how it fell off...

I'm not sure how effective they are to be honest - I've always made sure I put it back on, but as I do I'm thinking "what the hell is that going to keep out?"

So I wouldnt worry too much about it in this nice weather. trouble is you will need to split your balljoints and remove the hub to put it back on...

Maybe it was just lying about jammed in somewhere and there is actually one on it already?

If it was me I think I would just leave it..

Ah good answer. Nah this one isn't split, just fell out. I already have all the suspension stripped anyway due to all the bush's and what not gone nasty. Probably stayed stuck to the CV joint when I pulled the hub off. Cheers!
