Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Im building my 1380, and have decided to fit duplex timing gear, I had no problem with simplex. I've fitted it and it seems to be catching on the bolt that hold on the timing plate. How can I fix this?

Has anyone else had this problem, or does there seem to be a deeper lying problem, the end floats all seem fine.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

Yeah when fitting a duplex kit the 2 bolts by the crank have to be removed, the timing plate countersunk then fit either 2 brake drum screws or allen key headed tapered Screws/bolts. Make sure you do them tight as you don't want them rattling around in the timing cover. Speaking of which if the timing cover has the splash gaurd built in (lip of metal) this will have to be cut out & also there is a dent near the lower part of the timing cover normally by the timing mark. This to has to be banged flat (from the inside out).

The two bolts on the backplate (closest to the cam ) should be replaced with countersunk grub screws an loctited in - the timing cover will also require simple modification there's a spotwelded lip on the inside that needs removing - some advocate grinding this out but it's easy to remove with a decent pair of grips - lots on threads on this topic if you use the search...

Yeah i did mine on monday. You need a 1/2" drill bit and you need to use countersunk drum brake screws. Countersink the holes until they're pretty much flush mounted. Heres a pic of mine:

Problem with brake drum screws - is getting them tight enough to do any good. Far better to use Allen head c/sunk screws, bit if using brake screws be sure to use Loctite (mentioned already) and bang them home with an impact screwdriver! Also - check if the chain has replaceable links - if so, be sure to fit with the link stems outwards away from these screwheads - otherwise they may catch.

or you could just grind a little off the head of the bolt to save messing about.

that maybe a bit of a bodge though

The correct screws are 1/4"UNF x 1/2" long countersunk socket head screws.
Make sure they are put in with Loctite on dry and oil-free threads.
I 'stake' mine in as well. 'Staking' a screw is where you get a centre punch, put it on the edge of the screw and the edge of the countersink and give it a big 'whack' with a large hammer. this forms a wedge of metal to stop the screw coming loose.

Doh! I've used brake drum screws, but i've not put lock tight on them! I've already done my cam timing aswell. Hopefully they'll stay put...

Also, theres a dint in the timing cover where the crank sensor bit is (if you have that on your timing cover) and you have to hammer this dint out, otherwise it'll rub on the chain. I was in the process of doing this yesterday, i think i've almost got it all out but its still rubbing somewhere...
