I have a 1275 A+ freshly built engine, I assumed it used a pre-engaged starter but before it went off for machining it had an inertia on it. I counted the teeth today on the flywheel and there are 107. Is that pre engaged or inertia?

Thanks

Craig

107 teeth on the ring gear means the old fashioned intertia starter....

A + engine always had pre-engaged starter - but it depends on the ring gear on the flywheel. The inertia starter enters from behind (!) - the pre-engaged does so from the front - and the ring gears are angled differently to allow this. They can be swapped about. So - you need to look at the ring gear to see which starter it will accept.

When the A+ first came out it had a pre verto clutch and inertia starter, but I think all vertos had pre engaged starters. Bmcecosse's advice about teeth profiles is the most useful indicator.

Agreed - all A+'s were not Pre-engaged...

And to confuse it even more: my A+ (998) had a verto clutch with inertia starter :D

Wow - sure it's not mix and match in later years ? I'm pretty sure part of the A+ upgrade was to verto clutch and pr-engaged starter. But - perhaps there were some in-between cars! Of course - some have used an inertia starter on a verto flywheel - either turn the ring gear - or put up with the badly meshing teeth noise!

There certainly are some strange things that came out of rover.

I had one of the few A+ 1098's - and that was running inertia start gear...

Badly meshing starter is one of my favorite 'horrible' noises :D

I think the pre-engaged starter was introduced by 1987?

On my SPI engine the inertia starter just locked up solid :D
What a bugger to remove it then... :D
