You could try speeding up the idle a bit, if it doesn't cause too much creep in drive. Electronic ignition ought to be useful on an auto and it shouldn't be beyond somebodies wit to rig up some sort of neutral/drive idle control.

Would an M reg not be spi so it would be the cold start mode and not a choke. Can you adjust idle on an spi ?
