Morning.

I could just pick up the phone & speak to an acne-riddled oik at Halfords about this, but I thought you lot would be easier to understand.

Please will you help me? I'm about to join the 20th Century at last & purchase myself a little robot that sits in my car & tells me where to go. ;)

But, I have some questions. Please be patient & bear in mind that I normally navigate using the moon, the sun's azimuth, smell, a strange sense of foreboding & small magnetic fish dangling on a string.

I have no ciggie lighter in Matilda therefore I need to:

1. Rely on rechargeabubble batteries - but how long do they last?

2. Have the robot hardwired - but can I use my robot in my other car or will it be fixed in place?

3. Which one, to get? I'd like UK, ROI & Europe, standard size screen, traffic alerts for less than £150.....do you lot have any preferences or recommendations?

Help please!!

:(

1. Rely on rechargeabubble batteries - but how long do they last? Ages - just take your 240v charger with you so you can recharge at you end destination. Keep it charged regularly and having no 12v on board is not a problem

2. Have the robot hardwired - but can I use my robot in my other car or will it be fixed in place? Not sure what you mean by hardwired, if there is no 12v supply then there shouldnt be any leads most have inbuilt aerials nowadays and the cradles are not as massive as they used to be (see a Tom Tom One)

3. Which one, to get? I'd like UK, ROI & Europe, standard size screen, traffic alerts for less than £150.....do you lot have any preferences or recommendations? You cannot go wrong with Tom Tom Ones, cheap, chearful, handy sized, portable and if you need a bigger screen due to failing eyesight go for the XL

;)

I'd recommend TomTom Ones - mine has been really handy and I just think TomTom are most likely to have accurate maps and updates etc. Maybe that is naive but they are the market leader and by far biggest company - plus they have community updates where you can alter maps yourself and share them etc.

As for battery life, mine is pretty poo actually. It's the only negative about mine - I sometimes have to turn it off to try and conserve battery on a long journey, which isn't ideal. I am thinking about fitting a cigarette lighter because of this at some point.

2 - 3 hours for pretty much any shatnav device, as Ethel says a 12v supply is easy enough to fit and you can have it discretely under the dash or in the glove box where it could charge an Iplop or your mobile out of sight

Hey Juju :(

We got our first Sat Nav last year, and to be honest I love it, which I never thought I would ;) We got a TomTom 360-Go...

I'm a fantastic map reader, but of course now that I'm driving, I can't read a map :( I don't have a ciggy lighter fitted as yet, but I have one ready...Dad says they're really easy, so you could get one for a fiver or so and get someone to fit it :)

I obviously rely of the rechargable batteries our sat nav has, which lasts well, although I've not timed it yet :- It's very clear over the top of Henny's engine, which for a 998cc is quite noisy in the sense of the higher speeds. Would certainly recomend it for mini owners with loud engines! ;)

The best thing is was the ease of it! :- Sooooo easy! Perfect for a muppet like me :-

Good luck with sorting one out :)

One thing at a time. 20th Century first, then I might consider the 21st. :- Well, maybe. :-

Cheers, Babe.

I shall purchase my robot & see how long it lasts before it runs out of juice or I throw it out of the window for nagging at me.
