It really depends on the condition of the crank, i.e. how many grinds has it had - -10, -20, -30 and the block, i.e. how many re-bores has it had - +20, +40, +60 although you can always have it linered!!! Also, is it a pukka 3 sync, CR gearbox?

Doesn't the guy selling it know anything about it? If not you're going to have to either take a chance or agree a price based on what you find when you strip it and measure (micrometer) the crank journals and cyclinder bores?

Are u ure that engine is really a 1070 S?
If so, i wouldnt think twice, whatever are conditions.
About the bore and the stroke, now i dont remeber it right (it isnt a common engine) i have to give a look on some books.

1070 was born as an overbore of the 850 engine, so bore size is 70.6mm then stroke 68.26 mm.
With the same bore size there are the short engine 970 s (61.91 mm stroke) and the long stroke 1275 s (81.28 mm stroke).
About eninge numbres, they are quite caotic and dont follow a definite scheme as later minis do. Most of them have the same 9FSAH prefix as the 997 cooper eninges.

nice 1 cheers fella :)

well weve followed mr vizards chart at the start of modify your mini n broke it down to either a 970 s or a 1071,looks like its big enough block to be a 1275,tappet covers on rear,11stud head,no extra metal above flange on block but no engine numbers or stamps so gonna av to pull it apart

iv written them down so ill get the measurements from the engine n compare them

yeah i know its pretty rare just hope he lets me have it as iv heard good things about them

my ex's dad had one in his clubman years ago n he said it revved up too 14k??is this believable???

As far as i know, works car equipped with the 1071 had from 70 bhp at 6k to 85 bhp at about 7.8k revs.
Its the 970, which is a short engine, that is capable of very high revs.

the blocks worth a few bob and so is the crank if its not on its last legs, put it on ebay and you will see 500 quid is not unrealistic if its in good nick.

Someone on here bought one "un-stripped" and it turned out to be a bargain - crank -10, block linered but okay and CR G'box (£500), you but your tricket and take your chance??

Offer him £500 cash (wave it in front of his nose) and you may get it.

I have heard of unground cranks fetching £1000 alone!!!

Just a quick note, the head casting is AEG163 not AFG163 - IIRC the AFG reference comes from a typo in Vizards book.

The block casting number is not the same as the 1275 Cooper S (AEG312). I think 1070's were all AEG161
- it is found at the rear of the block, RHS

970/1070 block should have AEG 151 cast in the back.
