I've recently purchased the min MKIII MKIV (1969-1985) because it seemed like good collection of useful literature.
I bought the CD new under wraps from a reputed dealer.
I've tried the CD and there is no way I can make this work, the CD contains invalid PDF files,
The CD itself works files on it are ok it's the content that is invalid.
I've left a message on the HMC website and they failed to respond for over a forthnight.
Now I've send them an email.
My advise : Don't purchase the CD, I've contacted the dealer and he doesn't refund because he claims het can't claim form HMC...
Please be warned : don't purchase the HMC CD's , not through dealers or their online service

On my CD at least, the files were not corrupted, but encrypted, and I could only view them if I ran the viewing program that was already on the CD.
Didn't do me a whole lot of good though as the dealer I got it from gave me a disc for the SPI Minis, while I have a late carburetor model, and I couldn't get them to exchange it since it was a "free bonus" with the car.

Heritage CDs do not run under Vista. Period. I discovered this about 18 months ago when our XP desktop died and we had to replace it with a machine running the "new" operating system... Vista. I needed a cheap laptop for some work I was doing so I bought a used IBM laptop with XP so I could still use my CDs.
If you have a friend with an XP machine, take your CDs to them to try them. I bet the CDs will work in your friend's XP machine. Under Vista you cannot copy or open the individual PDF files as you discovered. There is something truly incompatible between Vista and everything about the Heritage CDs.
Those who have the Heritage CDs will be interested to know that the Heritage web site still has the following message:
"System requirements: Windows 98 minimum, Pentium III, 64 Mb RAM, Adobe Acrobat Reader v6.0.
These CD's do not currently work on the Vista platform - an upgrade will be available shortly."

That message has been on their web site for at least 6 months.

In think I may have gotten one of these CDs with my Mini when I purchased it, although I'm not too sure.

I would be interested to see the content on the cd for the Spi minis. Any chance you could do me a copy or upload it somewhere? Id be very very grateful. Thx, Matt

Excuse my taking a guess, but you are running Vista aren't you?
AS you pointedly said :you guessed, unfortunately for you I'm not running Vista

I knew about that statement.
I'm kind of a computer geek - who wants to try his luck at classic car mechanics...

XP Pro Sp3 - Acrobat 9.x (=> result : can start the content app on the CD, cannot open the PDF files, hangs up acrobat mention (secured) )
tried to open data (PDF) files using Acrobat (=> result : cannot open the PDF files hangsup acrobat )
Then de-installed Acrobat 9.x, and installed reader 6.0 from the CD (=> result : same as first)
didn't bother with trying to open files using the windows explorer
that for the tech-talk
What bothered me so much was that sending them a message through their website they didn't even respond like "we've received you message, we will get in touch again ..." ,
A little bit like "royals", when you meet them and talk to them they look at you with a face that expresses "from under what stone did you vermin creep into the daylight? who are you that you dare to speak to ... Our Royal Selves... ?"
If they are not going to reply I'll probaly stop over at their premisses on my way to B'ham in August

It is also finicky with the reader. It works with my CD writer, but with my DVD writer does not seem to. My antivirus software settings were set at the paranoia levels, therefore it complained about the AutoRunHL.exe file. That file needs to be installed in to Windows for the CD to run. It turns out to be the copy protection scheme for the CD. See more info at http://hexalock.co.i...Admin_issue.pdf
The document indicates the the first time it runs, you need to run as the Administrator and afterwards you can run the CD as regular user if you add their fix. I have not tried their fix yet.
And, don't even bother with Linux.
Hope that helps,
Ivan
P.S. I pretend to be a geek

Check this out, they might have a fix for Vista:

Hmm, maybe my CD is different than the Heritage one then. It came with Acrobat 4 rather than Acrobat 6, and will run under Linux using WINE. I'll have to dig it out again and check, I chucked it somewhere since it wasn't very useful to me, being for a different type of Mini and all.

I took another look and it might actually be for MPI.
The workshop manual on the CD says it was made in '96 for Minis from VIN SAXXNNAZEBD 134455. Not sure which Minis those are, but they're fuel injected of some sort, and the Engine Management System section mentions two injectors.
Definitely not the right CD for my car though.
Oh, and also it appears to not be Heritage, but Rover/MG RAVE.

Tried on a different pc all together? There may be a under lying issue with your computer and PDF/Acrobat reader.
did that however the problem moved with the cd (twice)
all XP machines
I hope a friend comes a long with a Win2K laptop and we'll have a go again
that Linux remark gave me an idea , just tested on a tower dual boot XP / Ubuntu
fired up the linux side - runs XP in a virtual box with adobe 7 - gave access to DVD, now the CD actually runs and i can read the files waht a hassle

I have a dual boot computer running Suze and win2k.
I have tried this on the win2k with mixed results, usually poor and very inconsistent.
Should this work okay on suze as well as it seems on Ubuntu?
Thanks

I myself am well aware that most of the stockists of these CD,s have been responcible enough to admit they wont work on vista though also think that Heritage have a bit of an Atitude Problem in continuing to sell them

Vista has been around for quiet some years now and Microsoft are soon to launch another Windows Version but still heritage continue to sell these Manuals despite them being useless unless you have an older Opperating System >

They really should Withdraw them until they are compatible with all Windows Versions rarther than selling something which is useless as the vast majority of us now run Vista.
Im guessing the manuals are compiled using their own archives? Maybe they should go back and rescan everything and recompile using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat, they should also be working in conjunction with Microsoft to ensure this doesnt happen again and works with the next version of Windows before they even launch the Revised Version
