The HS4 carb will overflow if the float bowl is not dead vertical. Stick with the HIF44 - make sure the fuel feed is going in the right connection! Yes it's a little big - but the variable choke (piston!) will take care of that. IF the fuel pressure is too high - it can be reduced by fitting a spacer between pump and block - so the pump stroke is reduced - worth a try after you have tried everything else!

ooo thats interesting because when i took my fuel pump off, i also took the fuel pump of my other 998 engine which is a pre A+ and the difference apart from the slight different design is that this one had a spacer fitted. also this other engine ran sweet before i removed it last year. ill take the pump off again and give it ago >_<:D:D as well as return to my hs4, i will take the float boal out of its fixing and hold it upright as i start it to see if it overflows first.

thanks, the replies has been very helpful.

Have a good look at the float valve and seat to make sure they aren't worn. Also look in a Haynes or the online manuals pinned at the front of this section to find out how to adjust a float. The fuel level in the float is a critical part of how your carb works, don't think of it as just a little fuel tank. Have a look on Youtube there are some good videos, from University Motors, that will improve your understanding.
