If you want to fit a 2.7 diff - then don't go beyond an MG metro cam - and do fit new cam followers with it - and do NOT fit 1.5 rockers! I agree with Nightrain - the 276 cam (ie ~ BMC 731) can be quite disappointing - however the 286 (~ BMC 544) cam is EXCELLENT - but does need some revving. Check what diff you have - it may be a 3.1 alraedy - in which case hardly worth changing it.
But I do worry that you don't understand bores and pistons - or how to change a diff - and yet you are planning on fitting a camshaft and presumably all the other work that entails ? What else has been done to this engine ??
If you want a bit more power -you should look for a 940 head with the larger inlet valves - these were on early MG Metro engines although I think by the time GTA came along - they had reverted to the smaller inlets. Measure them anyway - what size are they ?

sorry i haven't replied in a while, i'm afraid i had an operation yesterday, just dental stuff, nothin serious but was under general anesthetic.

at the moment the engine is in pieces and i must admit this is the first engine i have had apart but luckly my dad has rebuilt a few engines in his time and knows more than i do but i am learning. the head is a 12g940 does this mean that it does have the larger valves or are there variations in the 940?

i will check the diff and if it is the standard would the fast road cam be suitable if i used a 3.1 diff instead of going for the 2.7? as i'm looking at more motorway work in the future and as much as i can do while the engine is out to prepare the car for this would be great.

Mesure the inlet valves, if it's a standard head it will be either 33.3mm, or 35.7 if it's an early MG Metro. 940 is just the number for the casting.

3.1 diff will be fine - good compromise.
