Just remember that the Rover MPi Workshop Manual is "wrong" and the Haynes Manual is "right" - see below

im guessing the numbers simply refer to the plug it goes to, ie 2 goes to second from right, 1 goes to far right, and nothing to do with firing order?

Yeh, bottom left to 1, top left to 2, top right to 3 and bottom right to 4.
I think you can still get it to fire if they are the wrong way around due to the "lost spark" thingy, i.e. you get a spark at compression and exhaust strokes.

the coil pack is nothing more than 2 coils in one package, and it fires 2 cylinders at once, namely cylinders 1 and 4 are fired together and cylinders 2 and 3 fired together. it does not matter at which therminal the leads are fitted as long as its fitted to the right coil. normally the numbering stamped at the coil pack notes the cylinder the lead has to go to.
and there is a problem with the workshop manual. the numbering shown at the coil pack is often wrong.
by the way, a friend over here has a similar spec engine like yours. it needed reprogramming (yes, a new chip inside the ECU), but after that it put out 90HP and 110Nm at the dyno

and what would this chip be, or where could i get one?
basically im pushing the ECU to its limit. Im defo not fueling enough when i put the foot down, but i have the pressure regulator turned up nearly full.

it has been done at Rüddel Motorsport. the ecu is opened, the eprom removed, a socket fitted, than the car is put on the rolling road and tuned, a new eprom is burned with the new data and placed into the socket.
so its nothing you can order by mail.
for more info you best ask Faxe-Racing from the link above
there was an adjustable fuel pressure regulator fitted, did not work at all. the factory regulator with corrected fuel map worked best.

The main differencewith your MPi and mine is the cam, but then again, we are not sure if mine has a non standard cam or not? I also have the Superchips ICON Race Unit fitted, not sure if that would help at top end?
Noticed there's one for sale on eBay but I guess thats a lot of £££ for a gamble??

I've got a very similiar spec 1380 mpi with SW5-07 CAM, stage 3 head etc
I had my engine built for me so cannot give details about how it was setup but maybe its worth speaking to a specialist to see if they can highlight anything which may help...
I'm running the standard rover ecu...normally you won't need to replace it. Just because its a 1380, it doesn't stop how the ecu works. Maybe it has become damaged during installation or removal. Static can easily damage it without you physically noticing until you come to use it. Is there anywhere local that can check it using a diagnostic machine??
