For that money I wouldnt bother with a 998, get yoself a 1275 mg metro engine, and stage one kit it, and get a megajolt system.
Sorted.

if you want a fast car, do what I did, keep the mini for the nice days and buy a fast car!

unless you're dead set on staying 998, I'd suggest you ditch it for a 1275 or bigger. it's not really economical to tune a 998, when a really hot one will put out around the same power as a standard MG 1275 engine.

for a grand, you could probably build up a nice 1293 motor, with a decent cam, rebuilt box, and probably around 80bhp.....

998 tuning isn't cheap but is very do-able!!

I've got a 1015cc with a 12g295 cooper head, SW5 cam, light flywheel and lots of other nice bits on it.

I spent about £1200 on parts alone, no labour costs as I built it myself.

However that was a for a full rebuld inc gearbox/rebore/crank grind etc.

I got 50 at the wheels and 68 at the flywheel.

I think that proves my point exactly! Whilst Seamus will have a lovely engine, and he obviously wanted to tune the 998 because it's a fun little motor, all that work has resulted in an engine that puts out less bhp and less torque (almost certainly) than a standard 1275 MG metro engine.

Unless you have a reason to tune the 998, you're much better off going for a 1275 as a base to start from.

But for my money I get a revvy little buzz box!!

Prawns right, I could have gone the easy route and chucked in a 1275, wheres the fun in that???

The next stage for me is a supercharger!!

The thing is, tuning a 998 costs the same as tuning a 1275.

Instead of going 998 and overboring I could have started with a 1275 and done a 1310 lump, 12g940 ported head and done it to a similar spec to my smallbore. That would have probably given me say 85bhp.

I went the smallbore route just to be different and I had some parts like the head lying around, I also had a spare 998 kicking aound.

Getting power out of an A-series isn't cheap!!

So to answer your inital question....the best thing to make a 998 go fast is MONEY!!!

I've actually come to the conclusion recently that unless you are forever blasting around or racing, spending a fortune tuning or replacing engines is just a case of my *willy* is bigger than yours.

I've got a 998 stage 1, and I'll admit I've thought better cam, 12g295 head, plus 80 thou etc, but I've just travelled 300 mile to Cornwall towing a trailler filled with camping gear (8 man tent etc), 3 people in my car plus luggage. It had plenty of power, sat at 65mph on the motorway and had plenty left, no problems on hills, 44 mpg. Then we did 300 mile back.
After that if I did modify it would just be bragging rights and for the eck of it.

i'm just about to build a 998cc engine with a sw5-07 cam, flat top pistons, 12g295 head, belt drive kit, balanced bottom end and a stage one. my advice is to shop around. there are some really good bargains out there.

i got a decent donor engine that im going to use, that way i can do it slowly and get everything right.

I agree - the 1000 can be fun, there are plenty of 1275 motors around.

I have a 998 with mild port/cam and a weber, extractors and big exhaust, it goes well, and is fun.

I also have a 970s motor - bored to 999, super sprint cam, high lift rockers etc - that needs a rebuild. I am definately going to sort this out and have a screamer motor rather than get a 1275 like everyone else.

get a 1275 metro with a decent head, a hottish but not too hot cam, electronic ignition, and youll have a better ratio final drive.

I loved my 998 engines, I had 998 stage 1, with a ported head. They used too rev and rev. I loved them and always said I wanted a tuned 998. Then I got a 1275 motor cheap. Dropped it in and never looked back.

Although I now have a 1380, and I realy miss the 998's economy.

Im currently building a 1061cc spent about 3.5k so far, and hopefully will have about 70 - 75bhp at the wheels. Prawn is right about buying a 1275 and modifying that as you will gain more bhp and torque than you ever will with a 998 and will be alot cheaper than than trying to get every last bhp out of a small bore which costs alot of $$. Heres my spec for my 998, should update my thread really...
