the reason I want to stay with a 998 is because of insurance and I am not even 17 yet and I am doing a project for first car

I was think of putting a 1275 in a mini and not tell the insurance

but I don't know

and

thanks for the advice everyone

bad idea that
if you have an accident you will be in very big trouble

even putting a stage one on it at 17 will increase insurance a fair bit.

If you're willing to spend over 1k on a "Stage 3" kit then you may as well get a good MG Metro 1275 for a few hundred, drop that in and spend some of the difference on insuring it. You'd end up quids in!

Un-declared engine swaps are a bad idea. What happens if you have a crash that's your fault and the other car is a Bugatti Veyron?

Yup everyone is right. I spent a load on tuning up my 998. About 85 at the fly. Its a good strong motor and revs like buggery, but if you want serious power either win the lottery or build up a big bore with forced induction.

Now I'm fed up with the poky little A-series, and gone to the dark side :shifty: . At least its got 5 mains now to hold itself together ;)

Just to add: You REALLY dont need anything more than a standard 998 at 17. Mine was virtually standard performance wise when i first got it - nothing more than a stage 1 (and that wasnt even complete!!). Awesome fun - kept up with modern traffic no probs and taught me how to drive a mini properly :(

Blimey, I spent less than a grand on a 998 and have easy got over 80bhp 100% reliable for 5k miles so far. 0-60 in 8.5 secs and 45 to the gallon.

If you only 17 its not worth doing anything yet. Your insurance will be ridiculous!

Best bet is. Enyoy your mini atm, get some noclaims on you insurance, and collect some bits as and when you can afford it. Then put it together, by that time you'll be older, insurance lower and more experienced, plus you'll have alot better idea what will be good for you!

Everyone is missing the point here, he obviously wants his car to be more fun to drive, and the normal answer is to get more power, but i think he should get the suspension set up properly etc and lose weight from the car. Then what the car lacks in power it will make up for in more fun/ every other department :)
