A series engine block with an A+ gearbox...
See the three holes in a triangle on the back of the transfer case, this one of the modifications made to the case for A+ and is the mount for the engine steady/mount for the metro.
The gearbox itself is an A+ but will have the 4 bolt main bearing retainer and A series profile gears.... this was also common to the Mk1 metro up until the introduction of the Mk1 Metro Turbo which is where the 3 bolt retainer came into effect.
You could consider the box to have to be a cross over box, as you'll notice it still uses studs on the diff casing and not the flanged bolts common to the later A+ gearboxes.

If you've ordered an A series gearbox you will find that the transfer gears will not fit and you'll be hunting around for a set of A series gears and also an A series transfer case ( the alternative is to use a conversion bearing in the transfer case for the idler )
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES use A series transfer gears with an A+ transfer case without the conversion bearing, if you do then within 1000 miles you'll be after and new gearbox, transfer case and most likely engine as the idler will destroy itself.

1982 was when the Mini went from A series to A+ and that was when the Mini City became the City E and the Mini HL became the HLE (not for long though in the case of the HLE, as the Mini Mayfair got launched very soon afterwards).
The Mini Clubman Estate (or 'Mini HL Estate' as it was called after the Clubman Saloon and 1275GT got discontinued during late 1980) with the by then standard 998cc engine was discontinued just prior to the Mini getting the A+ engine.
