They aren't actually legal to tow with a Mini.
tell that to the convoy that drove from germany last week
and holland
and france
and the UK
rumour has it that the EU have banned tow bars being made for classic minis registered after 1989 - but Thule still sell them
I think it was more to do with the Twin-Point Minis and Rover (or BMW?) didn't bother getting type approval or whatever it's called and as such their not supposed to be used to tow anything.

Anyone else remeber seeing the footage of a 1275gt towing a caravan up the french alps?
It was publicity stunt for a caravan manufacturer in the '70s, Taffy surely you've seen it?
No I haven't, but I'd certainly like to.

Righto, where to begin.
A few years (decades) ago, I had reason to tow a number of things behind a Mini.
Surprisingly, this was in a 998 and I had no problems apart from a couple of things, using a small caravan similiar to the ones shown.
The car pulled the trailer ok, struggled a little on the hills (we were in Wales) and could get a bit 'snakey' going down hill.
Strong winds could be a problem, but no more than any other vehicle.
But the rest of the time it was fine.
I then got hold of a 'teardrop' trailer, similiar to the green one that was parked behind us at IMM.
It was fantastic to tow. The roofline was equal to the Mini, it was light to tow and very stable due to the wide axle.
Was a shame when I got rid of that, it was originally built in the '50s. Had to get rid as it was rotten.
I'm actually after building my own one, for various shows and things.
Their fantastic to tow and can be bought/made to owners specs. Mine will be pretty basic, with enough room to sleep 2 people and maybe a small pull out cooking area.
The only other type of trailer I've used is the foldable trailer tent types.
The proper tent/caravan ones were rather heavy and prone to leaks. The one I used was ruddy useless. The hard sided foldable trailers look quite good, but again weight might be an issue.
