It'll be a worn Baulk Ring on the 2nd to 3rd Syncromesh, THE most common problem on a mini gearbox.

If it was the clutch you would have similar problems on ALL gears. Liek Jaydee said the MPI baulk rings where not known for their strength. For gearbox rebuild and inspection PM Guessworks on here

Guessworks is a tad far away for a gearbox inspection. Route planner says its 3 hours away >_<

There is a gearbox expert on this forum

LOL only one eh??

The best place to get it done, would be if you can find an old school mechanic. You know the ones, they've done cars for a living all their 50+ life, drink a bit to much tea and are normally self employed renting garage space...

Sounds familier...

It won't be worn 'syncro rings' - well they will now be worn - but the REAL damage will be to the dog-teeth on second gear which will need renewing!
