so have i got my coil wired in correctly or wrong? After 10 mins of trying to start it when it wouldnt start it would be too hot to touch by hand. Havnt had a chance to get it on the road yet to get cool air flowing.

Going off retro's information and your readings, you are running a ballasted coil designed to operate at 9v at a full 12v all the time. Which will explain it getting hot.
Easiest solution is to buy a non ballast coil and keep the wiring how you have it.
Ignition switched 12v supply from fuse box to positive on the coil.
The negative on the coil goes to distributor.

A coil for a ballasted system wont last long if feed with a 12V supply. You definately have to sort it out.
