i currently have a black and white non reflective number plate... which yes i know is illegal and would only pass a MOT if the tester is blind or drunk.

i was talking to my mate who has my car in his workshop and he said that my number plate was illegal for two things

1) non reflective

2) didn't have the post code of where is was made/registered.

now i want keep a vinyl plate in the current position, so could someone point me in the right direction so i will still be able to pass a MOT with a vinyl plate?

you mean a stick on type plate?
i thought that was illegal becuase there is no flat area on the front of the mini to palce it meaning it can be hard to read or something strange.

although i may of misunderstood your example

It is illegal. But i think it would be legal, if you was to put your original - White plastic number plate on aswell?

... for the MOT :D

yes that would be legal then for the MOT lol

but then take it off again and run the risk of getting collared by the police.

could always just leave the vinyl one as..just as long as it has the proper number plate on it as well i don't think they can say much.
they might say i hope you don't drive with that stick on one on only...then just say no its for shows mainly to make it look pretty >.<
