Vehicles registered from 1973 must by law have reflective plates, from 2001, they must be of the later type letter & number design & carry the BS number or some way of identifying the maker. You may be able to get away with a reflective vinyl plate, it's worth asking your MOT tester's opinion on that beforehand. There are various confusing elements in the law as to where you attach it, some say if it can be read from the requisite eye-test distance it's ok, some say it must be totally flat. The police sometimes complained about the one on the bonnet of my rally car, I used to say it was type approved because Minis were produced by the manufacturers like that, (Abingdon). That may or may not be true but no one was prepared to argue. I never had any complaints about that positioning from an MOT tester.

Your will possibly be more likely to get away with it if you had black writing on a white background...

*I do not condone doing this, or say you will pass, lol*

when I make adhesive plates like this I always do 2 pairs - a reflective pair, and a non-reflective pair - you then makes your choice which ones you want to run with.

I always point out that the reflective ones should be used. I dont think I've done any adhesive plates for anything younger than a '98.
